Grove started well and following a touchdown attempt by No.8 Rory Gratwohl, which was adjudged to have been 'held up', scrum half Owen Gustafson went over in the corner for a 5 : 0 lead. This lead was increased when full back Roger Sevier slotted a penalty for 8 :0. Newbury hit back with two penalties of their own to take the half time score to 8 : 6.
Following the break, Grove's play was characterized by a whole series of 'knock ons' and forward passes and it was Newbury who overhauled Grove's lead with a good try taken by them at lightning speed. This was converted to provide the visitors with an 8 : 13 lead. Their lead was increased when they slotted a penalty for 8 : 16. Both sides received yellow cards and Grove were able to reduce the deficit to 11 : 16 with another Sevier penalty. Play continued fairly evenly for most of the remainder of the second half albeit with Grove's handling continually letting them down. With one minute left in the game a Grove penalty line out on 5 metres saw the ball popped to blindside winger Guy Nicholl who dived over in the corner to save Grove's faces with an unconverted try.
