Grove still unbeaten after close shave with Windsor

Grove scraped a single point win over visitors Windsor to remain unbeaten after five league
matches thanks to two superbly taken tries by debutant scrum half Nick Hayes and No. 8 Ben
Nicholl and the flawless boot of fly half Roger Sevier, who kicked both conversions and two
penalties from two attempts.Windsor started this match very strongly, consistently attacking Grove through some well-
worked moves in the backs and some uncharacteristic poor tackling from Grove allowed them
time and space to exploit this. It was therefore no real surprise when the visitors took an
early lead through an unconverted try although the score was more due to Grove's lack of
attention than anything else when a very quick line out was taken five metres from the Grove
line and Windsor were able to run in a try with ridiculous ease from hooker Owen Oxlade.

Sevier put Grove on the scoreboard with a well struck penalty kick shortly after, but continued
pressure from the visitors lead to their second try from centre Paul Nunn following a break
and offload from fly half van Terheyden which this time was converted to give them a 12-3 lead.
The Grove tackling continued to misfire, and the Windsor back line attacks continued throughout
the first half but despite their dominance in the field Windsor's kicker van Terheyden was having
a nightmare. Having missed his first conversion in front of the posts he then managed to hit
the upright from a penalty kick, also in front of the posts. Grove managed to conjure up solid
defence to prevent Windsor from scoring again in the half and had several chances themselves,
but bad decisions with ball in hand meant at least 2 scoring chances were wasted. Sevier kept
Grove in touch with a second long range penalty kick to provide a half time score of 12- 6 to the
visitors. As the second half began Windsor still looked the stronger team but then they had a player
sin binned following another awful penalty attempt in front of the sticks, which once again
rebounded off the upright. Against the run of play it was Nick Hayes who then really brought
Grove back into the game with a superbly taken try from a full 60 metres out following a
lung-busting passage of play which changed hands 3 times. This was converted with ease by
Sevier to give Grove a single point lead at 13-12. Windsor strove to recapture the lead and
were helped when hooker Jon North was sin-binned, but it was Grove who scored again quickly
when Ben Nicholl intercepted a stray pass in the Windsor back line to run a try in from 30 metres.
Sevier's conversion took the score to 20-12 meaning Windsor now had to score twice to regain
the lead. The visitors lifted themselves to score a final forwards try driven into the corner
from replacement Pete Wright which van Terheyden converted from the touch line. This was the
final score and Windsor can rightly consider themselves unlucky to go back to Berkshire with
nothing to show for their massive effort, but this Grove side has learned how to win even
when playing poorly and had just enough to win this highly competitive match. Roger Sevier was named as Grove's Man of the Match but Ben Nicholl also had a magnificent game
in attack and defense and Nick Hayes shone on his debutGrove team: Eltham, North, Keen, Maryon, Chapman, Fredericks, Kerr, B Nicholl, Hayes, Sevier,
