Understrength Grove do the double on plucky Broadmoor Staff

As a result of many players non-availability, Grove had to draw on their reserves to field a team on Saturday but nevertheless went on to beat Broadmoor Staff for the second time this season. Grove welcomed back No. 8 Ben Nicholl after a long layoff who replaced injured brother Guy in the back row and who also skippered the side in the absence of injured Nick Sevier while Steve Proctor deputised for injured Jon North and Shaun Sherwood benched in place of injured brother Stewart. Ben Law and Simon Peel started in the centres while new boy Henry Parsons came in at full back to replace injured Chris Clare.

The early pressure all came from Broadmoor only relieved by a couple of powerful runs by Law and long clearance kicks from fly half Roger Sevier. Despite being pushed back into their own half Grove's Parsons began an attack and good work from wing Gareth Hudson led to Law going over to put Grove 5 : 0 up, somewhat against the run of play, after 23 minutes. With 5 minutes to half time Broadmoor deservedly equalised with an unconverted try in the corner. Just before the break lock Paul Miles was very harshly given a yellow card for a spear tackle after a Broadmoor player was upended although he was put down safely by the Grove player.

Again Broadmoor started the second half the stronger but it was Law who again looked dangerous when he marauded upfield with isolated attacks. Grove were now beginning to get the better of their much heavier opponents in the pack and Jon Chapman showed enterprise with darting attacks from the scrum base. Grove were now starting to look confident and it was they who went further in front when a good attack led to the ball being fed to Parsons in the line who had no trouble touching down in the corner to put Grove 10 : 5 in front with 10 minutes of the second half gone. Immediately Ben Nicholl and fellow back row man James Kerr stormed back at Broadmoor but a relatively easy penalty kick at goal which resulted was missed by Sevier. Shaun Sherwood now entered the fray in place of Steve Proctor at hooker. Grove were now in command and pressuring the Broadmoor line. A quick penalty tap and pass by Sevier to Law saw the big man crash over for his second try of the day and with Sevier's successful conversion, Grove were now moving out of sight of their visitors at 17 : 5. Parsons and Nicholl linked well to provide Grove's next attack but no score resulted. Mark Tugwell substituted for lock Jon Chapman and Grove were now looking very dangerous. Forwards and backs all linked together well to produce Grove's bonus point try which eventually fell to wing Harry Carr, making him Grove 1st team's top try scorer for the season, overtaking Nick Sevier will play no part in the final game. With the conversion missed the final score of 22 : 5 had been reached.
