Following Marlow not being able to put a team together for our league game, and therefore awarding us 5pts, the coaches decided an internal 11-a side game would be more beneficial than a normal training session.
So, with the teams split evenly on paper, we looked forward to some running rugby and to see who was putting themselves forward for selection for the Reading game next Sunday.
The opening engages were even, until Ed sniped through a gap to give the McCarthy Maulers an early lead. However, the Elwig Ruckers soon found some form, with Tom and Jack both crossing after some nice hands and direct running. As we approached the end of the 1st third, Sam crossed for the Maulers, to end the first period close at 12-10 to the Ruckers.
The Ruckers now had the slope and a following wind, and played smart rugby throughout the second period, with Chris and Tom (x2) giving them a commanding 29-10 lead.
In the final period, we expected the strong wind to give the Maulers a chance to close the gap, but the opposition had other ideas, with Ethan and Max (x2) crossing the try line to extend their dominance. Ed gave the Maulers a consolation final score with another good break, but Jack had the last score for the Ruckers, to give them a final victory of 55-15.
Overall, an enjoyable game and some good play throughout from both teams. Yes, the Ruckers played the better rugby and showed a bit more commitment in the tackle area, however, the Maulers didn't give up and I am sure the game has given the team good preparation for next week's outing at Reading.
Match photos also on website (useful for A'level projects?).
