Grove maintain composure in edgy away game

The Colts were on their travels again; this time, east, down the M40 to High Wycombe. With 1st team call ups the day before, and a number of injuries, the team again had to rely on the younger members of the squad.

In the first half, Grove kicked up the slight hill and against the wind. Early encounters proved the break down wasn't being managed as actively as by previous officials, which led to a level of frustration and took our forwards some time to adapt. An early penalty gave Grove a well deserved lead, following continued pressure in the Wycombe 22. The rest of the first half saw both team struggle for consistent clean ball. However, most of the action continued to be in the opposition half, and a couple of breaks from our new back line led to the forwards picking and going around the corner, which in the end was too much for a determined defence and led to a try that was unconverted, for a half-time lead of 8-0.

The half-time team talk was focussed on playing with more composure, and not to get involved in the growing tension in the game. Well, part of the message was taken on board at least, with two further tries, to end the game 20-0 to Grove. However, yet another flash point half way through the second half, led to a yellow for a Wycombe back-rower, showing how focussing on our game was more important than being dragged into a punch-up!

Overall, some good performances from the younger players, and, although we weren't at our best, showing more than enough to win the game comfortably.
