This week, we journeyed to Littlemore for our fifth match of the campaign. Grove faced some last-minute squad changes due to injuries and player unavailability, but our core team was still in action. We were well aware that Littlemore presented a physical challenge.
Grove wasted no time, launching a fast-paced attack that had them threatening Littlemore's line after a well-executed kick chase. However, it took some slick ball movement and quick footwork from No. 10, Jorge Everson, to secure the first try of the game, with Jorge successfully converting it. Twenty minutes into the match, our prolific try-scorer, Wayne Ball, found a gap in Littlemore's defense and scored Grove's second try, with Jorge again converting, bringing Grove to 14 points. The score remained unchanged as both teams fiercely battled on. Unfortunately, A. Straw had to leave the field due to a dead leg injury, allowing Tyler Ewing to step in as the wing.
Just before halftime, the ball made its way down the line, and Thom Harrington showcased his speed, scoring in the corner. Five minutes into the second half, Aaron Briscore suffered an ankle injury, leading to Ady Amies taking his place in the second row. Thirteen minutes into the second half, Jorge crossed the line once more and converted his own try, coinciding with a Littlemore player receiving a yellow card. This spurred Littlemore, and within five minutes, they managed to score and convert a try.
Grove had a tough time controlling the game, and with 15 minutes left, a player was sent to the sin bin for a high tackle. Both teams engaged in physical exchanges, and the game remained tightly contested until the 80th minute when Littlemore broke through the defense and scored under the posts.
In the end, Grove emerged victorious, but there is room for improvement in game management. With five games and five wins, we currently top the league, with the final score being Littlemore 14 - 26 Grove.
