As with Grove's previous league visit to Trowbridge last year the hosts again snatched victory from defeat in the dying minutes of a game which Grove thought they had 'tucked up'.
Despite Trowbridge taking an early lead with two successful penalty kicks from their burly fly half Lloyd Davis, it was the Grove team which dominated the first half of this rain soaked match. Grove overhauled Trowbridge's lead when wing Guy Nicholl broke away to touch down for 5 points, fly half Mike Martin successfully converting for a scoreline of 6 : 7. Next it was scrum half Joe Chilvers who scrambled over for Grove's second try but the conversion attempt was unsuccessful and the score moved to 6 : 12. Martin then scored with another successful penalty kick, retaken due to a Trowbridge player illegally charging the initial attempt, for a 6 : 15 half time Grove lead.
After the break Davis for Trowbridge and Martin for Grove swapped penalties to take the score to 9 : 18. From this point on however, until near the very end of the game, Grove were wholly on the defensive with Trowbridge launching attack after attack, Grove holding out thanks to some very fine tackling. Sadly however, with what little possession they were able to gain, Grove were now knocking on constantly and there was no leniency from the referee. With about fifteen minutes to go substitute flanker Simon Peel received a 'team yellow card' for what the ref saw as persistent infringements by Grove. During this time when Grove were down to 14 men, Trowbridge flanker Matt Howard scored from a well taken line out and combined tail end peel movement. With the conversion successful the score moved to 16 : 18 but Grove were still confident of a win with virtually no time to go, especially as they now returned to a full complement of players. Trowbridge had other ideas however and sprang a last ditch attack which resulted in another Davis converted try scored by hooker Dave Martin, for 23 : 18. With less than a minute to go Grove rallied strongly but despite a break from centre Nick Sevier which saw him clear with the ball in hand and heading for the Trowbridge try line, a prior Grove infringement was called by the referee and the game was over for a very despondent Grove team who did nevertheless leave with a bonus point..
