In Memory of Eurof Thomas, Founder Member of Grove RFC

Chris Boyd20 Jun - 15:08

One of the four friends whose vision created our club in 1971. A true servant of the game, forever part of Grove’s story.

It is with great sadness that Grove RFC has learned of the passing of our founder member, Eurof Thomas.

Eurof was one of the four visionaries whose idea, discussed among friends during the 1971–72 season, led directly to the creation of Grove Rugby Football Club. Alongside John Fisher, Joe Corrigan and Gwyndaf Evans, he recognised the need for a rugby club in the Grove and Wantage area and helped turn that ambition into reality.

From the earliest days of the club, Eurof's commitment was evident. He played a central role in organising the first meetings, recruiting players, securing facilities and helping establish the foundations on which the club still stands today. When resources were limited, Eurof was never afraid to roll up his sleeves and help. His practical work on the club's original changing facilities and his determination to make rugby possible for local players embodied the spirit that continues to define Grove RFC.

Eurof also provided a lasting link to his Welsh rugby roots. The first rugby ball ever used by Grove RFC was donated through his former club, Cwmllynfell RFC, symbolising the friendship, generosity and love of the game that he brought to Grove. He played for the club for two seasons and served as captain before returning to Wales in 1974.

More than fifty years later, Grove RFC remains proud of its place in the community, and that success owes much to the efforts and foresight of Eurof and his fellow founders. His contribution to the club can never be overstated; without people like Eurof, Grove RFC would simply not exist.

On behalf of everyone at Grove RFC, we extend our deepest condolences to Eurof's family, friends and all who knew him. His legacy lives on every time a player takes the field in Grove colours.

Rest in peace, Eurof. You will always be remembered as one of the founders of Grove RFC and a true servant of the club.
