Leighton Buzzard were definitely in the ascendancy initially and went into a 3 point lead from a penalty. Their lead didn't last long however because a very clever Grove move saw centre Guy Nicholl touch down for the first try of the game, which he also converted to provide a scoreline of 7 : 3. Buzzards hit back with another penalty for 7 : 6 after 20 minutes. Grove then declined two seemingly easy penalty kicks at goal but were unlucky not to be awarded a penalty try following a deliberate knock on by Buzzards when a Grove try from the wing looked inevitable. Two more seemingly possible penalty shots at goal were declined by Grove and Buzzards turned the ball over and kicked out of danger. This was followed up by a charge to the Grove line and a try between the Grove posts for a 7 : 13 lead. A further penalty attempt by Buzzards was missed but they followed up on a Grove fumble to touch down in the corner for 7 : 18 which became the half time score.
Buzzards started the second half well but were beginning to show some signs of weariness and it was Kiwi wing Brendon White who was beginning to make his presence felt with a couple of great charges for Grove. Simon Peel substituted for Jack Horrocks at flank and made his presence felt immediately. Buzzards received a yellow card following a quickly tapped Grove penalty when the miscreant clearly failed to retire ten metres before making a tackle. Again Grove declined the seemingly easy penalty kick at the posts and instead went for a scrum which although won ended with a turn over to Buzzards and the ball ended deep in Grove's half of the field. Nevertheless Grove struck back and with a great solo run down the wing White scored to bring Grove back into the game. Nicholl's touchline conversion took the score to 14 : 18. Fly Half Dave Johnson now put in a monster kick to touch and Grove were beginning to look very threatening. Then following a Buzzards scrum, which was successfully turned by the Grove pack, Johnson shot over the line to regain the lead for Grove. Nicholl's conversion making it 21 : 18 to the hosts. Grove now turned up the gas and it was flanker Cash Chivers who was busy making inroads while another yellow card emerged for one of the Buzzard's centres. From a line out steal Grove again pressured the Buzzard's whitewash and it was Nicholl who went over for his second try of the day although he then missed the straightforward conversion. Grove were now 26 : 18 up and looking confident with a bonus point secured. It was now Grove's turn to receive a yellow card which went to flanker Dave Wells. Undaunted Grove struck again this time through wing Danny Ferguson who finished off a series of great passes rounding to score between the posts. Nicholl's conversion taking the score to 33 : 18. Grove were now relentless in attack and taking advantage of a Buzzards fumble White hacked on and gathering his own kick, touched down for his second try of the day, this time between the posts with Nicholl's conversion taking the score to 40 : 18. Grove now brought on Jimmy Wallbridge for Steve Dixey at hooker but it was Buzzards who were showing renewed energy and with a big surge scored a try in the corner for a scoreline of 40 : 23. They attacked again but full back Huw Lewis saved the day for Grove with a fantastic tackle. Alex Morgan came on for the binned Wells and immediately played a part in the next try, firing the ball to White, who with an astute dummy passed the last line of defence to complete his hat trick of trys. Nicholl's conversion successfully completed the game and Grove had emerged worthy winners and in the process secured themselves from any threat of relegation.
