Colts show spirit to gain draw against RWB
By Matt Turner
Grove Colts first outing of the season was against a strong Wootton Bassett team who had enough players to play two teams! The first half started fairly even with both teams keen not to make an early mistake. It was clear RWB had pace out wide and they were first to exploit some rusty tackling to take a 5-0 lead. Grove however, were dominant in the scrum and following some good clean phases Grove were soon in front following a try from Max Elwig which was converted. Unfortunately, this seemed to spur RWB into action and two further try's lead to them leading 19-7 at the break.
RWB started the 2nd half with basically a new team , unfortunately Grove with a smaller squad of only 18 were less fortunate , however, Grove started the stronger and following some good backs plays Ally McCarthy scored in the corner to bring the gap back to 7. This score brought Grove together as a squad and the forwards were now operating as a unit and giving their backs a platform to play on. Further phases lead to a slightly mis directed cross field kick which was picked up by Grove to score under the posts, bringing the scores level.
RWB made further changes , and put pressure on the Grove line however, the back row defended a couple of 5m scrums with some aggressive tackling and the game ended all square.
A great game of rugby , lots to work on from the Grove perspective , but a lot of positives to build on.
