Grove 37 - Milton Keynes 29 – Saturday 12 September 2009
The 1st half from Grove was exceptional, with the forwards working very hard and dominating
the MK pack at the ruck. The scoring opened in th 4th minute, with George Rautenbach running
off Roger Sevier’s inside shoulder from a lineout and scything through to score near the posts.
An MK player was sin-binned for a late challenge on Rautenbach after he had scored. Grove’s
second try came 10 minutes later from a lineout 5 metres from the MK line. Prop Richard Keen
orced his way over the line, carrying several defenders with him and this was quickly followed
by a try from No.8 Jamie Fredericks, who latched on to a pass following a break by flanker
Guy Nichol, who was outstanding throughout the game. MK hit back just before the break with a
try from winger Dan Walker to get them on the scoreboard, but the 1st half was convincing from
Grove and they turned around 27-5 up, with Roger Sevier’s boot unerring in its accuracy, kicking
all 3 conversions and 2 penalties.
The 2nd half saw MK come into the game a bit more, with stern words from their coaches obviously
having an effect on them, but it wasn't until both Nichol and McKenzie were off the field that
their possession counted for points. Tries from scrum-half Dan Pearson and captain Richard Hill
closed the scoreline briefly before the try of the match from Ben Law. Big 2nd row Rob Weaving
took an inside pass from Jamie Burns and sprinted through a huge hole in the MK midfield, before
drawing the cover defence to himself and sending the supporting centre Law in under the posts.
MK hit back with a try from hard running centre Dave Matthews but once Grove had all 15 players back
on the field they managed to see out the last few minutes without incident.

The whole Grove team deserve praise for an outstanding start to the season, but Roger Sevier was
Man of the Match for a great all round game and kicking - 7 from 7 to give himself 17 points.

Newbury Stags RFC 22 - 24 Grove RFC – Saturday 26th September 2009

In a triumph of determination, skill and fitness Grove snatched victory from the jaws of defeat
overcoming Newbury Stags 22 - 24 at Newbury in the first Southern Counties (North) league
encounter between the two teams this season. It was the Stags larger forwards and slick set
of backs that started the stronger and Grove who were making a lot of unforced errors in the
early exchanges. Grove full back Paul Shephard launched two early attacks from his own half
with the scant possession Grove enjoyed in this period, but the home defence held firm and
indeed spent long periods in the Grove half. The referee gave most advantage to the attacking
side throughout the game and it came as no surprise that after only 5 minutes one of a number
of penalties already awarded against the visitors was given on the 22 metre line and in front
of the posts. Amazingly the Newbury kicker missed the easy three points on offer but they
kept the pressure up from the ensuing 22 drop out. Lock Lee Wright left the field with a blood
injury to be replaced by Rob Weaving and Grove continued trying to attack Newbury but to no
avail.
Grove then lost prop Richard Keen with a blood injury, replaced by Gary Eltham but this was
short-lived and Keen soon returned to the field as did Wright. Clever attacks from Newbury
and a further series of penalties against Grove gave Newbury a second chance to get points on
the board, which this time they did through fly half Dave Jones to take the lead at 3 : 0.
This was soon followed by a try from centre Phil Simmons between the posts, converted by Jones,
to take Newbury to 10:0.
Just before half time however, and from the first serious foray into the Newbury half, a series
of forward thrusts by Grove enabled scrum half Will Mackenzie to touch down following a very
alert break by flanker Jamie Fredericks. Fly half Roger Sevier's conversion brought Grove back
into the game at 10:7 down. Newbury struck back immediately however and thanks to a missed tackle
by Grove, full back Danny Williams scored in the corner to leave Newbury leading at half time
by 15:7.
As the second half progressed the penalty count against Grove continued to rise as the seemingly
impenetrable Newbury defence held firm despite a number of good attacks by Grove. It was however
the Stags who scored next with a try from Byrne and converted by Jones from a wheeled scrum on
the Grove line. The scrum had gone round significantly more than the 90 degrees allowed and
should have been reformed and to make matters worse the ref awarded a penalty to Newbury from
the kick off following the Grove players protestations. With the score now at 22:7 it looked
like all was lost for Grove but then following great work by forwards and taken on by the backs,
left wing Zach Grant sailed over for another Grove try which was not converted. The score was
now 22:12 and there was just a glimmer of hope for Grove. Then in an explosion of pace and
agility centre Nick Sevier destroyed the Newbury defence with a solo side-stepping run down the
left wing and leaving the Newbury full back for dead ran in to score between the posts. Brother
Roger Sevier's conversion was then a formality and Grove were really back in the game at 22:19
but with little time remaining. It was becoming clear at this stage that Newbury's big forwards
were wilting in the heat and Grove's superior fitness was beginning to tell. This transferred
into advantage being given by the referee to Grove as the team going forward. From a scrum on
the Newbury 5 metre line, Jamie Fredericks was then adjudged to have knocked on as he dived over
for what looked to everyone like a good try, but the ref gave a 5 metre scrum to Newbury instead.
With only a clearance kick from the Newbury fly half needed he amazingly dropped the ball and
with tremendous alertness, scrum half Mackenzie was there to touch down putting Grove 2 points
clear for the first time in the match.
From the restart, Newbury attacked with all the energy they could muster, and with the last
play of the game the ref awarded a penalty to Newbury 40 metres out and in front of the Grove
posts. Heartbreakingly for Newbury but joyously for Grove, this was missed and Grove had gained
a momentous victory. A lot has to be said for Newbury, who played exceptionally well for the
most part, but the Grove side proved they have the legs for the campaign and lots of character
to come back so strongly in the last quarter.

Saturday 3rd October 2009 - Grove 72 Bicester 0
Grove RFC handed out a 72:0 (actually it was 74:0 but the ref got the score wrong) thrashing to bottom of the table Bicester
on Saturday and in so doing went to the top of the table themselves. The game was played in a very strong wind throughout
which for the first half was in the face of the Grove players. Despite this they racked up 34:0 half time score thanks to tries
from prop Richard Keen, debutante full back John Barrett, centre Nick Sevier, centre Jamie Burns, No. 8 Ben Nicholl,
flanker Guy Nicholl and two conversions from fly half Roger Sevier. During the first half Bicester had a couple of opportunities
to score tries but the first was thwarted by No 8 Ben Nicholl who blasted his way out of defence to alleviate the danger
and the second failed following a good break by Bicester scrum half Craig Smith who unfortunately then dropped the ball
over the Grove try line. A Bicester penalty shot at goal was also missed.
Immediately following Bicester's second half kick off Grove left wing Tom Harrington gathered and sprinted half the length
of the field to score between the posts for a try converted by Roger Sevier. Next, great interplay between Harrington and
Barrett, allowed the full back to score his second try of the match. Then hooker Jon North got on the scoresheet with a neat
try, converted by Roger Sevier. At this point Grove seemed to take their foot off the gas for about 10 minutes during which
time there was no further scoring but then both Roger Sevier and Tom Harrington were unlucky not to score tries when
firstly Sevier was called back by the referee for a dubious knock on having gone clear followed by Harrington being taken out
with a high tackle right on the try line. Jason Evans then made his first appearance for Grove this season, substituting for
right wing Paul Shephard and immediately scored a simple try with his first touch of the ball. This was converted by Roger
Sevier to give Grove an unassailable 60:0 lead.

Almost immediately Evans was back over the Bicester try line but unfortunately dropped the ball from what looked like
being a certain second try for the substitute. Scrum half Will Mackenzie then scored a try, converted by Roger Sevier and
then Evans made amends for his earlier faux pas with a neat kick to the corner which Nick Sevier sprinted after to bag his
second and Grove's final try of the match.

Unfortunately the match was called to a halt some eight minutes early, by mutual consent of both captains, after a Bicester
player was left unconscious following a hard but legal Grove tackle for which an ambulance had to be called to the field.

Although Bicester were not able to put up the strongest of challenges in this match, Grove were awesome in both attack
and defence, particularly the back row and scrum half combination which constantly destroyed anything Bicester attempted.
The Grove backs showed what they could do with good possession and new boy John Barrett was outstanding in attack.

Saturday 10th October 2009 - Swindon 18 - 22 Grove

Centre Jamie Burns scored a marvellous hat trick of tries with fly half Roger Sevier converting two and scoring a penalty
to edge out home side Swindon 18 : 22 on Saturday. This was despite Grove missing some 6 first choice players for the
match.
Away league confrontations with Swindon over the last few seasons have shown that they are never an easy side to beat
at Greenbridge Road and this match proved no exception with the lead changing hands a number of times during the game.
Swindon started well and it was clear from the outset that their pack was as big and strong as ever and indeed they took
a 3:0 lead from a penalty after just five minutes. Within ten minutes the scores were levelled however, when Sevier slotted
a long range penalty for Grove. Swindon replied in kind and went 6:3 ahead shortly after but Swindon's pack were now
beginning to dominate their opposite numbers in both scrums and lines out. Grove always looked dangerous once the ball
was moved to their backs and Burns side stepped his way to the first of his tries to nudge Grove into a 6:8 lead following
a great line break by full back John Barrett. Just before half time Swindon missed the chance to go ahead when a penalty
kick went wide of the posts. On the stroke of half time Grove lost centre Jason Evans to a hamstring pull.
Evans was replaced by Simon Cramp who went to the wing position with Zach Grant moving into centre for the 2nd half.
A Sevier penalty attempt from the half way line 5 minutes into the half went just wide and the resultant knock on from the
defenders attempted run out of defence went unpunished. Grove lost prop Richard Keen to a head injury at this point with
Gary Eltham coming on to prop the other side of the scrum from his twin brother. Then Swindon scored a try down the right
wing, which was the result of 3 missed tackles and some controversy on the sideline over a possible foot in touch. The
conversion attempt was missed from wide out, but Swindon were back in the lead at 11:8. In an attempt to level the scores
Sevier made another very long range penalty attempt at goal but this again was just wide of the mark. Sevier was unlucky
again when a quick tap penalty by Mackenzie enabled the fly half to break through the Swindon defence and go clear for
the try line only to be called back by the referee in order to have the penalty re-taken. Then with just ten minutes remaining
Burns scored his second try following superb inter-passing build up by all of the Grove backs and in particular great running
from Barrett and a neat inside ball from winger Harrington,
Sevier's conversion putting Grove into an 11:15 lead. The Swindon pack then came into their own, mauling Grove back
several metres from a lineout before feeding their backs, who put the inside centre in for a try under the posts after some
mazy individual running. Their conversion put Swindon back into what looked like a winning position of 18:15 but not to
be outdone and with only 90 seconds left on the clock, Burns scored his hat-trick try after a very alert and quick break
by Grant had taken the visitors right to the Swindon try line and another slick passing move had put Burns clear. Sevier's
touch line conversion meant the home side needed at least a try to win and with virtually no time left they were unable to
score and victory from an unlikely position was secured.
This had been a very tough match for both sides but the close win enabled Grove to stay top of the league by virtue of
having scored more points than Witney. Both sides remain unbeaten but level on points difference.

 Saturday 17th October - Grove 20 - 19 Windsor

Grove scraped a single point win over visitors Windsor to remain unbeaten after five league
matches thanks to two superbly taken tries by debutant scrum half Nick Hayes and No. 8 Ben
Nicholl and the flawless boot of fly half Roger Sevier, who kicked both conversions and two
penalties from two attempts.
Windsor started this match very strongly, consistently attacking Grove through some well-
worked moves in the backs and some uncharacteristic poor tackling from Grove allowed them
time and space to exploit this. It was therefore no real surprise when the visitors took an
early lead through an unconverted try although the score was more due to Grove's lack of
attention than anything else when a very quick line out was taken five metres from the Grove
line and Windsor were able to run in a try with ridiculous ease from hooker Owen Oxlade.

Sevier put Grove on the scoreboard with a well struck penalty kick shortly after, but continued
pressure from the visitors lead to their second try from centre Paul Nunn following a break
and offload from fly half van Terheyden which this time was converted to give them a 12-3 lead.
The Grove tackling continued to misfire, and the Windsor back line attacks continued throughout
the first half but despite their dominance in the field Windsor's kicker van Terheyden was having
a nightmare. Having missed his first conversion in front of the posts he then managed to hit
the upright from a penalty kick, also in front of the posts. Grove managed to conjure up solid
defence to prevent Windsor from scoring again in the half and had several chances themselves,
but bad decisions with ball in hand meant at least 2 scoring chances were wasted. Sevier kept
Grove in touch with a second long range penalty kick to provide a half time score of 12- 6 to the
visitors.
As the second half began Windsor still looked the stronger team but then they had a player
sin binned following another awful penalty attempt in front of the sticks, which once again
rebounded off the upright. Against the run of play it was Nick Hayes who then really brought
Grove back into the game with a superbly taken try from a full 60 metres out following a
lung-busting passage of play which changed hands 3 times. This was converted with ease by
Sevier to give Grove a single point lead at 13-12. Windsor strove to recapture the lead and
were helped when hooker Jon North was sin-binned, but it was Grove who scored again quickly
when Ben Nicholl intercepted a stray pass in the Windsor back line to run a try in from 30 metres.
Sevier's conversion took the score to 20-12 meaning Windsor now had to score twice to regain
the lead. The visitors lifted themselves to score a final forwards try driven into the corner
from replacement Pete Wright which van Terheyden converted from the touch line. This was the
final score and Windsor can rightly consider themselves unlucky to go back to Berkshire with
nothing to show for their massive effort, but this Grove side has learned how to win even
when playing poorly and had just enough to win this highly competitive match.
Roger Sevier was named as Grove's Man of the Match but Ben Nicholl also had a magnificent game
in attack and defense and Nick Hayes shone on his debut

Southern Counties Intermediate Cup first round – Saturday 24th October 2009
Grove 27-18 Beaconsfield
Grove progress to the quarter-finals of the new Southern Counties Intermediate Cup with a
27-18 win over Beaconsfield at Cane Lane.

Beaconsfield kicked off with a strong wind at their backs, and a lethargic Grove side were
immediately behind when Beaconsfield scored a try within 2 minutes with their young captain
and lock Callum Wilkinson running in untouched from 25 yards out. The wind enabled the
Beaconsfield fly half, Nick Tappin to punish any Grove indiscretion and his kicks continued
to pressure Grove. Beaconsfield were camped in the Grove half, and after ten minutes were
awarded a penalty in front of the Grove posts from which kicker Ross Ritchie had no trouble
scoring three points and added another 3 to the tally a short while later when Grove were
penalised for offside. To make matters worse a 20 man brawl between the sides led to Grove's
hooker, Gary Eltham being yellow carded (a case of mistaken identity apparently!). With the
referee strangely not allowing Grove's front row replacement to take the field passive
scrummaging ensued for ten minutes. Despite this setback, every time Grove had the ball,
they attacked Beaconsfield vigorously with strong runs from centre Nick Sevier, No.8
Ben Nicholl, lock Weaving, props Keen and Eltham and flankers Nicholl and Kerr. Each time
however the attacks broke down and Beaconsfield used sensible kicks, assisted by the strong
wind, to push Grove back into their own half. It was from one beautiful long Tappin kick to
the corner that Beaconsfield were able to score again when their right winger Josh Rankin
collected the ball from the kick and dived over for five points. With forty minutes having
been played the referee then amazingly allowed play to continue for a further 18 minutes
before finally bringing the half to its end. During this period one of the Beaconsfield
flankers and Keen from Grove were sin-binned and Grove turned around 18 points down

Grove started the second half far more positively and with the wind now in their favour,
were able to set up camp in the Beaconsfield 22. Following a set move close to the Beaconsfield
line Nick Sevier powered ,over for a touch down to bring Grove back into the game, brother
Roger converting for 7-18. Grove wing Tom Harrington made a great break for the line but the
Beaconsfield defence held firm. Grove's other wing Simon Cramp was replaced by John Gerring
and then Grove were awarded a penalty which Roger Sevier blasted over to bring the score to
10-18. At this point, Richie Revell, one of the Beaconsfield props, had to leave the field
with a leg injury and passive scrummaging was ordered for the remainder of the game. Grove
sensibly decided therefore to bring on back row player Jamie Fredericks as replacement for
front row man Terry Eltham. Harrington then had another strong run before Grove found themselves
defending again. A terrific cross field kick to touch by Roger Sevier alleviated the pressure
and then Guy Nicholl had a super run to put Harrington in for a great Grove try which Sevier
converted to leave the home side trailing by just one point. Grove were now playing at full
steam and terrific running from Ben Nicholl and Jamie Fredericks lead to another Grove penalty
out wide which Sevier again converted to put Grove into the lead for the first time at 20-18.
Grove continued to pressure with huge kicks from both Roger Sevier and scrum half Dave Maryon
and Gerring was unlucky not to score when he spilled the ball from a difficult pass.
Unfortunately and very harshly the referee then yellow carded Gerring for cursing his own
mistake! Despite this player shortfall Ben Nicholl completed a great run to score in the
opposite corner following good pressure from Fredericks. Despite the wide angle, long distance
and difficult wind conditions, Roger Sevier completed another 100% kicking performance by
putting the conversion over to provide the final winning scoreline of 27-18 in a match which
was slightly overshadowed by some strange refereeing decisions.

Saturday 31st October 2009 - Amersham & Chiltern

Amersham & Chiltern 22 Grove 6

A somewhat depleted Grove team lost their unbeaten league record at Amersham & Chiltern on Saturday and in so doing dropped a place to 3rd in the league, behind Witney and Amersham respectively. The Amersham winning score of 22-6 was achieved by a combination of their superior set piece play, a superb 100% place kicking display by their full back and captain Dan Kinsey and far too much indiscipline by Grove. Grove were not helped when they found prop Richard Keen and lock Rob Weaving were unavailable on the morning of the match

Grove were behind in less than 3 minutes as Kinsey converted a penalty for a Grove player holding on to the ball on the ground. The same offence was almost immediately repeated but this time Amersham chose to kick for touch. They surprisingly lost their own line out which enabled Grove to launch an attack involving fly half Roger Sevier, centre Dave Maryon, full back John Barrett, lock Nathan Brooks, winger Zach Grant and finally No.8 Ben Nicholl who was taken into touch deep into the Amersham half. This gain was nullified however when, from another penalty, Amersham kicked long to touch. Amersham followed up some good pressure with a converted try by debutant winger George Mitchard to put the home side 10 points clear after 11 minutes. Grove however moved back into the Amersham half and were rewarded with a penalty of their own which Roger Sevier put over from distance to bring the score to 10-3. From the restart, Ben Nicholl put in a great pass to allow Nick Sevier to go for the line but the Amersham defenders managed to clear his kick and chase. Grove then launched another fine attack through Ben Nicholl, John Barrett and Grant only for it to be ended by a violent shoulder charge on Grant from the Amersham hooker and former Springbok trialist Stefaan Myburgh. Lucky not to receive a red card he was sent to the sin bin for 10 minutes but Grant also had to leave the field for treatment to his cut head, replaced temporarily by John Gerring. Without the presence of their influential hooker, Amersham were put under pressure from the visitors, but the defence held firm until his return to the pitch. Grove tried to launch further attacks through their backs for the remainder of the half, but with ball being delivered from a pack that was under pressure, these were not the flowing moves wished for. Despite the home side’s set piece dominance, great defence, particularly from the Grove half backs, meant that Amersham could not get over the try line to score again and the half ended with the score remaining at 10-3.

The second half started exactly as the first had with Amersham scoring from a long range penalty, again awarded within a minute of the kick off, but Grove struck back immediately themselves with a penalty kick from Roger Sevier to take the score to 13-6. As the second half progressed Amersham’s pack continued to dominate their counterparts in the set piece and it was only great scrambling defence from Grove that stopped 2 good breaks out wide from being scored. In particular wing Tom Harrington stood out and flanker Jamie Fredericks also repulsed a big attack virtually single-handedly. Ben Nicholl earned his Grove man of the match award with some strong running from scrums and open play but the home defence again held firm. Late replacements Gerring and Kerr contributed well when they had their chances but as the game stuttered though a series of penalties it was clear that some of the Grove players were becoming frustrated. This inexcusably resulted in back-chatting and dissent to the referee which just made matters worse and it was from three such incidents that Amersham were able to add another 9 penalty points from the unerring boot of their full back Kinsey. Both Grove and Amersham managed to muster up a couple of tired attacks near the end of the game, but none of them came to anything and Amersham deservedly finished ahead but the scoreline of 22-6 was slightly flattering due to Grove's indiscipline rather than ability on the day

Saturday 7th November 2009 - v Aylesbury

Grove 18 Aylesbury 6

Scintillating attacking play by 2 try winger John Barrett secured a home victory over Aylesbury for Grove on Saturday.

Grove overcame Aylesbury by 18 points to 6 in a match that was never allowed to flow by an incredibly
zealous referee. The first penalty was awarded to Grove after just 6 minutes and was duly slotted
by fly half Roger Sevier for a 3 point lead. Almost immediately Aylesbury were on level terms
when their full back Gary Horne replied with a penalty following a Grove offside at a ruck.
Before 10 minutes play, another penalty was awarded to Grove, duly slotted by Sevier. Dave Maryon
had to leave the field at this point with a broken nose caused by a swinging arm from Horne, and
was replaced permanently by John Gerring when he could not continue. The Grove backs tried to
run ball at Aylesbury on regular occasions, particularly through No. 8 Ben Nicholl, full back
Nick Hayes and wing John Barrett but each time the attacks were halted by penalty awards to
Aylesbury and it was from one of these that Horne levelled the score again.
More penalties followed and the game became very fractured as the referee felt the need to blow
his whistle at any and every opportunity. Aylesbury controlled the game for a short period
but when Horne missed on his next attempt to kick for the lead, Grove started to assert themselves
through the forwards and Aylesbury's game resorted to one of kicking for position every time
they received the ball. With half time looming Horne was yellow carded for punching and
was lucky not be sent off. This time Roger Sevier took a tap penalty resulting in a great run
from John Barrett although had he realised centre Nick Sevier who was clear in space in support
there would almost definitely have been a Grove try scored but instead a penalty was awarded to
Aylesbury when Barrett took contact allowing them to clear the immediate danger. A dangerous
moment for Grove then occurred when the Aylesbury hooker Graham Sale slipped a tackle attempt
and had a fine run up the middle of the park but this was halted by good tackling and the
half time score was 6-6.
From the 2nd half kick off, Aylesbury attacked but they were thwarted by a big tackle from
captain Steve Maryon. Aylesbury then attempted an unsuccessful drop goal and Grove scrum half
James Barrett took a very quick 22 metre restart followed up by a good run from flanker Guy Nicholl
whose inexplicable chip ahead was then brought back with a strong run right to the Grove try line
by one of the Aylesbury locks.
Grove played out of their half with a fine run from Gerring and play moved to the other end of
the field. Grove then developed their best attack of the game so far with some great inter-passing
between the backs and terrific driving from the Grove forwards which resulted finally in a try for
John Barrett. Roger Sevier converted to put Grove seven points clear at 13-6 and Grove were now
gaining the ascendancy. Another great Ben Nicholl run then occurred having been fed the ball by
Hayes followed by a super run down the wing by James Barrett. Strong forwards pressure from
Aylesbury took them back up the pitch but Grove's defence held firm and it was they who broke
out with a huge kick from Ben Nicholl followed up by brother Guy which only ended when the ball
was knocked forwards. Aylesbury then attacked strongly again but good work from hooker Jon North
and a particularly big tackles from Roger Sevier and Nick Hayes held them at bay once more.

Grove kept attacking whenever they could, and Aylesbury just about managed to keep them at bay,
but the referee assisted by awarding penalties consistently against Grove when it appeared Aylesbury
were the team at fault. Aylesbury pushed right back to the Grove try line when in possesion but
again Grove broke out with great runs from John Barrett, Hayes and Gerring who was just stopped
from scoring by a great Aylesbury tackle 5 metres short from the try line. Aylesbury then started
to have trouble with their lineout but further penalties to them kept Grove out from having the
ball for any length of time. When Grove finally got the ball again from a stolen lineout ball by
flanker James Kerr, it was moved very quickly across the field for John Barrett to run in his second
try of the day and Grove were leading 18-6. Aylesbury did not give up however and strong running
and a further series of penalties allowed them to approach the Grove try line once more but again
big tackles from Steve Maryon and Jamie Fredericks held them out and another opportunistic break
out by the Grove backs almost saw John Barrett go over for his hat-trick but a knock on stopped
the move close to the Aylesbury line. Again Aylesbury pushed right back up the field but a smashing
tackle from Guy Nicholl halted their progress and the game came to a close with Grove as the
deserved winners despite the vast number of penalty against them

Grove win at Beaconsfield 13-23 Saturday 14th November
Grove continued their winning ways with a 23-13 victory at Beaconsfield on Saturday and so kept
themselves in the promotion hunt, remaining in 3rd place in the league with only one loss from
eight games played. This was always going to be a difficult game given atrocious weather
conditions and in particular a gale force wind blowing from one end of the pitch.

Grove played against the elements in the 1st half, and were regularly pinned back into their
half with kicks from the Beaconsfield No 10 Nick Tappin. An early penalty to Beaconsfield
was kicked wide from Tappin, but with lots of handling errors from both sides it was difficult
for either side to gain the ascendency. Beaconsfield continued to kick given the wind advantage
but to Grove's great credit they counter attacked after every kick. Several of these attacks
from Guy Nicholl, Peel, Fredericks and Gary Eltham ensured Beaconsfield didn't get the field
position they wanted. Grove continued to press into the home side's half of the field with good
ball movement between fly half Roger Sevier and Ben Nicholl, playing out of position at inside
centre. The biggest talking point of the half was when a 20 man brawl started following an
altercation between Guy Nicholl and Beacs big lock Dave Parkes at the front of a line out, and
with Nicholl, Terry Eltham and Beacs prop Wai Kwong Lin all sin binned as a result, a bit more
space opened up on the field. Despite the numbers disadvantage Grove continued to counter-attack
with particular effect from full back Nick Hayes but inevitably most of the play was in the Grove
half of the field. With Tappin then off the field with concussion, Beacs changed their kicker to
centre Ed Haslett who converted a simple penalty kick after 17 mins to put the home side in the
lead by 3-0.

With the return of the sin-binned players Grove began to apply more pressure with all the running
was now being done by the visitors although Beaconsfield continued to gain great territorial advantage
by using the wind well. A rare running attack from Beaconsfield lead to another penalty which was
again converted by Haslett to give a 6-0 scoreline. Grove forced their way back into the Beaconsfield
half through great forwards driving and strong running from wing John Barrett, centres Nick Sevier
and Ben Nicholl in the backs. Eventually the Grove pressure told and they were awarded a penalty
when a Beaconsfield player handled in the ruck in front of the posts. Despite the wind Roger Sevier
elected to kick for goal and was successful to narrow the gap to three points at 6-3. Beaconsfield
tried to apply some pressure to get some much needed points before half time, but were held out
by some big tackles from Wright and Fredericks. A final big effort from Beaconsfield almost lead
to a try between the Grove posts but their only reward was a kickable penalty which they decided
to run instead of taking the easy 3 points, and knocked on to end the half from which Beacs
would have hoped for more points, given the wind advantage.

With prop Richard Keen replacing bloodied Terry Eltham in the front row, Grove started the 2nd half
confident that the wind offered more than the 3 point advantage Beacs had managed in the 1st half.
The first decisive move came when Roger Sevier slipped a quick pass to hooker North who scampered
fully fifty metres down the wing before chipping ahead for touch deep into the Beacs 22. This was
quickly followed by a penalty to Grove from which Roger Sevier levelled the scores at 6-6. Grove's
tactics seemed now to be to keep the ball with the forwards rather than use the wind or their clearly
superior backs and despite good work from locks Steve Maryon and Lee Wright no real progress was made
until Hayes had a great run which should have resulted in a try for John Barrett if he had passed
to the pacy winger. Beacs came into the game a bit more with strong running from their forwards and
some assistance from Groves indiscipline allowing them a series of penalties, but with the wind
still a huge factor, any turnover ball for Grove was punted downfield.
Grove once again began to assert pressure with their best attack of the day. With most of the back
line involved in a move taken further forward by some strong running from Guy Nicholl, the ball
was slipped to Nick Sevier who touched down to give Grove the lead for the first time. Roger
Sevier converted to make the score 6-13 to Grove. Beaconsfield hit back with a strong attack but
Grove were now beginning to steal most of their lineout ball with James Kerr a constant threat,
and were so able to relieve the pressure. Following a great forwards drive and another big kick
downfield Guy Nicholl scored Grove's second try after good inter-passing between Hayes, Fredericks,
Keen, and James Barrett. Again this was converted by Roger Sevier to take Grove to a 6-20 lead.
Another monster kick from Roger Sevier led to a Beaconsfield 22 metre drop out but they had a man
in front of the kicker followed by back chat to the referee so Sevier was presented with the easiest
of penalty kicks to complete another 100% kicking performance and increase Grove's lead to 6-23.

Beaconsfield then made a monumental effort to force their way back into the Grove half and were
finally rewarded from a series of rucks close to the Grove line when prop Kwong Lin forced his way
over the line. The conversion from Haslett gave the final scoreline of 13-23, which flattered Beacs
slightly as Grove were the dominant side for the most part.

Southern Counties Cup – 1st Round - Saturday 21st November
Grove 12, Milton Keynes 13
Grove exited the Southern Counties Intermediate Cup at the quarter-final stage after allowing Milton
Keynes back into a match they could have closed out. Having led 12-3 at the break, Grove
took their foot off the gas and the visitors' pack punished them with two well-worked tries.
Fly half Roger Sevier, whose wild pass had contributed much to Milton Keynes' second try,
had a chance to sneak victory for Grove with a penalty deep into stoppage time. But his effort
drifted wide and the hosts were unable to get out of jail.
Grove may prefer to have got a sloppy display out of the system in the cup so they can maintain
their promotion push in Southern Counties North. Milton Keynes' well-drilled pack were a force
throughout the match and they began well despite playing into the wind. They took a deserved
lead on 16 minutes with a penalty from full back James Dean.

Grove won a messy line-out on 22 minutes and spun the ball over to the right where centre Jamie
Burns was able to finish well. Burns's try showed Grove's greater firepower in the backs, but
they were never fully able to cut loose. The same player made a try-saving tackle after 29 minutes,
then Milton Keynes had lock Mark Austin sin-binned for dissent. Burns's centre partner Nick Sevier
ran in a superb solo try on 38 minutes after receiving the ball on halfway and accelerating through
Keynes' helpless defence. His brother Roger Sevier converted and there looked every chance Grove
would build on their lead.
Visiting scrum half Daniel Pearson came into the game after the break, but Dean's errant boot stopped
them reducing the arrears. Nick Sevier had to pick up and clear well after his scrum half Dave Maryon
threw a poor pass.
Milton Keynes were now dominant up front, especially in the scrums, and scored on 63 minutes when
loose-head prop Richard Hill ploughed over following some good handling. Ten minutes later, and
after some sustained pressure stemming from Roger Sevier's injudicious pass, replacement tight-head
prop Neil Forton touched down from a powerful driving maul. Grove had slightly more urgency after
this, but did not help themselves when prop Gary Eltham was sin-binned. Indeed, Hill was held
up as he sought his second try.
Referee Keith Latham added on nine minutes for stoppages, but Grove's only chance came and went
as Roger Sevier's penalty drifted wide.

Saturday 28th November - Grove 15 - 10 Slough

Grove 1st's defeated Slough at Grove with a relatively lacklustre performance, particularly
in the second half when they were unable to score against their visitors, conceding the half
7-0.Slough started strongly and took an early lead with a penalty kicked by full back Kevin
Dunne. Grove tried running the ball through their pacy backs and were unlucky when flanker
James Kerr was forced into touch near the Slough try line. Grove's first points came after
10 minutes from a Roger Sevier penalty awarded for Slough's offside move which levelled
things up at 3 : 3. Slough pressed back into the Grove corner but Grove's defence held firm.
Against the odds Grove's pack had a mighty drive against the much heavier Slough pack and drove
them fully twenty metres before Nick Sevier fired out a quick pass to flanker Guy Nicholl
who outpaced the cover for a great try under the posts, converted by Roger Sevier to put
Grove in front by 10 : 3. Slough came back strongly but Grove escaped when the Slough kicker
missed a simple penalty in front of the posts. Slough continued to pressure but Nick Sevier
took a deep Slough kick from his own try line and side-stepped his way to the middle of the
park before taking contact. With Slough not committing men to the breakdown, Grove's very astute
hooker Jon North went straight through the middle of the ruck, picked up the ball and ran
fully 50 metres to score in the corner. This took Grove to half time and a leading score of 15-3
but not before the Slough hooker James Flischer was sin binned and Jamie Fredericks and Ben Nicholl
had a couple of marauding runs at their visitors.
In the early part of the second half Grove tried some adventurous moves but largely these ended
with the ball being dropped and possession being lost. With Slough gaining in confidence they
declined an extremely kickable penalty to go for the line out in the corner but this backfired
when Grove were able to drive the Slough forwards off the ball after a period of intense pressure
by Slough. The move finally stopped when the Slough winger was penalised for holding the ball on
the ground. With a huge clearance kick from the fly half Grove were clear of danger and Richard
Keen substituted for fellow prop Terry Eltham. Grove captain Steve Maryon and the Slough scrum
half Ross Evans were then sin binned together. At this point the game began to deteriorate with
very little decisive action from either side but Grove continually managed to lose possession.

Grove's defences were good however with hard tackles being put in by scrum half Dave Maryon and
Richard Keen. Another monster penalty kick took Grove deep into the Slough half but even though
the resultant line out was won by Grove a careless knock on by the scrum half gave the visitors
the advantage again. With the game now very scrappy one of Sloughs locks was sin-binned for
illegally pushing one of the Grove players. Grove continued to waste opportunities and Slough
began to exert the more pressure but then Grove had one good attack involving a break out by
Guy Nicholl, Jamie Burns and Dave Maryon which ended with the ball being kicked over the Slough
try line for a 22 drop out. With the light fading badly Simon Peel replaced Ashley Lane on the
Grove wing. Grove's discipline also started to desert them and they were marched up the field
through a series of penalties the pressure only being relieved by a huge clearance kick from
full back Nick Hayes. Richard Keen was then sin-binned before Slough pulled back a consolation
try from big prop Matt Fenwick from a 5 metre penalty, converted by Dunne to produce the final
score of 15-10.
Altogether, Grove were by far the superior team but need to start proving this by putting sides
to the sword more consistently. There were several good individual performances but only flashes
of what they are capable of as a team.

Saturday 5th December – Chipping Norton 8 Grove 10

Grove kept up their title challenge on Saturday but only just, when they beat Chipping Norton
by 10 points to 8 at Chippy. Chippy started strongly, attacking Grove from the outset and
gained a kickable penalty inside a minute. The kick from Adam Smith went wide of the posts
but Chippy came back strongly from the restart and kept possession away from Grove for the next
ten minutes. Grove's defence was good however and despite one or two missed tackles Chippy were
unable to break through for a try. Prop Richard Keen was outstanding as he often single-handedly
drove the Chippy forwards back in contact. Finally after 15 minutes of play and pressure Grove
did concede a penalty in front of the posts and Chippy took a deserved lead of 3 points. This
time the restart worked much better for Grove with Ben Nicholl taking a clean catch from fly half
Roger Sevier's kick. Then, burrowing deep into Chippy territory he passed to Hayes who moved the
ball to centre Ben Law. The big centre took the ball forward and after a chip through from scrum
half Hayes, Chippy cleared their lines. With Flanker Guy Nicholl stealing ball from the Chippy
line out and the scrum dominant, Grove continued the pressure. Chippy gamely ran the ball back
at Grove whenever they could but several huge hits on both forwards and backs by Keen stopped
them in their tracks. Late in the half, flanker Guy Nicholl, anticipating a pass that never came,
took out the dummy runner which led to a harsh yellow card. The resultant penalty took Chippy
right to the Grove try line and they had the platform for a try which came in the corner when
Chris Dixon broke Nick Sevier's despairing tackle. With no conversion made, Chippy now had an
8 : 0 lead. The restart from Grove was poor but Chippy kicked long to Nick Sevier who ran the
ball back strongly before being caught. Although Grove looked dangerous in attack, they kept
turning the ball back over to Chippy with basic mistakes just when space was starting to open
up which gave Chippy the chance to counter attack. In particular flanker Dawson was beginning
to look dangerous with ball in hand but great tackling from Keen and Roger Sevier in particular
held them at bay. With Grove still under pressure Chippy attempted a drop goal which was missed.
Grove got back into the Chippy half and with a penalty award Roger Sevier brought Grove back
into the game with a good 3 point kick. With half time looming and with Chippy having had
virtually all of the possession and pressure an amazing turnaround happened when, from his own
22 metre line, Roger Sevier, seeing the Chippy centres were too far forward, threw out a huge
long pass over their heads to brother Nick who collected and sprinted up the field, beating
three men with superb side steps before passing to the supporting Burns who then scampered his
way to the Chippy line and although tackled near the line, was able to touch down one handed for
a terrific try. Roger Sevier's conversion giving Grove a somewhat unexpected half time 10 : 8 lead.
Grove started the second half still making mistakes with the Chippy handling by and large very
efficient but Grove made up for it with superb defence and some colossal clearance kicks by Roger
Sevier. Yet again Richard Keen was everywhere, tackling like a demon. When Grove's backs did cut
loose however, they looked by far the more dangerous outfit. Centre Ben Law, using his undoubted
strength, tried time and time again to crash through the Chippy back line but eventually should
have passed to his supporting players. Eventually Law was replaced by Dave Maryon, who made a
strong impact in both defence and attack. The Grove forwards continued the good approach work
and pressed right to the Chippy line and lock Lee Wright in particular was unlucky not to crash
over. Grove's pack, ably led by skipper Steve Maryon, did manage to drive their counterparts over
the try line but the referee brought them back for a 5 metre scrum. Despite continued pressure
Grove eventually were turned over and with a couple of quick penalties and a number of missed
Grove tackles Chippy were once again back in the Grove half. This time the Chippy pressure was
relentless and immense and for fully ten minutes Chippy were camped on the Grove try line. Grove's
defence was tremendous and equal to the pressure however, as the pressure from the Chippy forwards
was relentless. Following one 5 metre scrum Fredericks was superb in single-handedly driving the
Chippy attackers back from what looked like being a certain try. Eventually Chippy must count
themselves unlucky when what looked like a definite try, was refused by the unsighted referee.
Despite this setback Chippy again attacked ferociously this time through their backs but again
some terrific tackling held them at bay. Finally Grove's Ben Nicholl fought for and won the ball
and passed back to Roger Sevier who launched an absolute monster of a kick to take Grove deep into
the Chippy half. After this it was Grove's turn to attack and again it was the ubiquitous Keen who
emerged with ball in hand, tearing up the park smashing opponents out of the way as he went.
Grove's reward was a difficult penalty attempt from which Roger Sevier was unsuccessful. With time
running out Chippy threw everything at Grove but again Grove's defence was superb and finally
this exiting game came to a close with no scoring in the second half but with Grove just doing
enough to get the result to maintain their promotion challenge.

Saturday 12th December - Grove 15 Witney 19

Grove failed in their attempt to overhaul league leaders Witney on Saturday but had the game lasted another 5 minutes they
could well have been successful.
With 4 changes from the previous week, including the whole front row, it was not ideal preparation but despite this setback
Grove started very strongly and attacked Witney with vigour. After 12 minutes of continuous Grove pressure, when Witney
were unable to get out of their 22 metre area, the home side were awarded a touch line penalty, fly half Roger Sevier just
pushing it wide. Grove continued to apply pressure without any points reward and it was fully 20 minutes into the game befor e
Witney ventured into the Grove half of the field. The Witney forwards mauled well and drove into the Grove 22. With a penalty
awarded, Witney chose to go for a lineout and from another maul play was only stopped when Grove flanker James Kerr was
yellow carded for illegally killing the ball within the 5 metre area. Witney then decided on a scrum with Grove a man down, and
attempted a pushover try. The scrum broke up and from the restarted set piece Grove transgressed by going offside and the
referee awarded a penalty try to the visitors which was converted in front of the posts by Ed Mitchem to give Witney a 0-7 lead.
Grove made a few handling mistakes and with frustration their discipline suffered and with some backchat from a penalty it brought
Witney another 10 metres closer and presented them with a very kickable penalty which was then surprisingly missed by Mitchem.
Grove pushed back but Witney developed the next good attack after first their forwards pushed Grove off the ball then their backs
ran at Grove with a three man overlap but this was ruined by a forward pass to the winger. Half time score 0-7 in Witney's favour.
Witney started the 2nd half the brighter of the two sides, and with fly half Lamb starting to kick well, kept Grove pinned back in their half.
Grove hit back with a fine running attack from full back Nick Sevier who side-stepped several Witney players before being caught. The
Grove pressure lead to a kickable penalty but instead Grove elected to run and several promising phases of play promised much but fizzled
out. Witney then attacked through their forwards, and from another maul, the ball was spun wide to Lewis Collins who ran in with the overlap
at his mercy, with the conversion from Mitchem making the score 0-14. Then shortly after, and following good forwards pressure again
the Witney scrum half slipped over the line for a soft try which was not converted but which gave the visitors a seemingly unassailable 0-19
 lead.

With Guy Nicholl replacing Kerr on the flank, Grove began to pressure Witney with a fine attack all the way to the Witney line but with Ben Law
being penalised for holding the ball on the floor, Witney got the penalty to alleviate the pressure. Witney pushed back into the Grove half and
again were awarded a kickable penalty but again this was missed. Dave Maryon substituted for Ashley Lane on the Grove wing and
Grove again took play all the way back to the Witney try line and were unlucky not to get advantage from a charged down kick from Ben Nicholl
on the Witney line when they almost certainly would have scored a try. Now under real pressure Witney's fly half Lamb was yellow carded from
another transgression. Grove were now playing with great determination and were starting to apply good pressure from their pack and eventually
it was Ben Nicholl who scored following a great take at the lineout by lock Lee Wright and driving maul. Roger Sevier uncharacteristically
missed the conversion to keep the score 5-19. The penalty awards now started to move in Grove's favour with the Witney forwards tiring,
but it was too late to kick at the posts and so each penalty was run. Witney were lucky not to have more players sin binned with attempts to
kill the ball at most rucks and with Grove now clearly dominating the game and playing with much more speed and gusto, they looked dangerous
with ball in hand.
After another series of quick offloads it was Guy Nicholl who was able to dive over in the corner to take the scoreline to 10-19. Roger
Sevier's conversion attempt, unluckily for Grove, rebounded off the upright so Grove still had to score at least twice to win the game. In
desperation Grove were now frantically running everything even from their own try line and the handling was much improved as they moved
back into the Witney half. Witney now seemed to be in disarray and they were further hampered when their centre Lamb was yellow carded
leave them with only 13 men on the pitch. Taking advantage Ben Nicholl set off on a great run, knocking over 2 defenders before feeding Jamie
Burns and the Grove centre was able to dive over in the corner to bring the score to 15-19, again the difficult conversion was just missed.
Unfortunately for Grove that was the last action of the game and while on balance Witney just about deserved the win they can count themselves
lucky Grove didn't get their act together a few minutes sooner as the result would almost certainly have been different.

pitch thumped them 0 : 60. Aldermaston started strongly and went well for most of the first half
only trailing by 0 : 15 at the break but in the second half Grove overwhelmed them with 45 points

 Saturday 23rd January - Windsor 14 - 34 Grove
Grove got their season going again after a 6 week break with a pleasing 34-14 away win at
4th place Windsor. Missing captain Steve Maryon with his first child expected, Ben Nicholl
took over the captaincy for the day. Grove got on the scoreboard early in the 1st half in a
slightly fortuitous manner when a 55 metre penalty attempt by Roger Sevier bounced back from
the crossbar into open play. Speedy winger Tom Harrington made a crunching tackle on the
gathering Windsor player and with the ball quickly being turned over by Grove, flanker Jamie
Fredericks ran through to score from 25 yards. Sevier then proceeded to hit one of the uprights
with the attempted conversion. Grove looked the better side, and with the ball being controlled
well in the loose and the set piece working effectively, it was only handling mistakes and a
few silly offsides at the breakdown which were keeping Windsor in the game. Windsor capitalised
on one particular transgression with a penalty kick for touch for a 5 metre lineout and then
walked it over the line with a well worked driving maul, flanker Jonny Hayhurst scoring the try.
Van Terheyden missed the conversion to keep the scores level, and then missed 3 relatively simple
penalty attempts in a row as Grove's discipline let them down in dangerous areas of the pitch.
Grove managed to regain their composure and scored after 30 minutes with full back Nick Sevier
running through unopposed from a brilliantly worked backs move on the Windsor 22. Brother Roger
slotted the simple conversion for a 12-5 lead. A further penalty conversion a short time later made
the score 15-5 and Grove were starting to exert a lot of pressure. Windsor managed another penalty
shot before half time, with winger James Driscoll taking over and converting for a half time score
of 15-8 to Grove.

Windsor started the 2nd half with a lot of purpose and with mistakes and
transgressions once again creeping into an otherwise excellent Grove game,Driscoll once again stepped
up to convert 2 more penalties to make the score 15-14 and give the home supporters something to
shout about. Significantly, at this point the Windsor no 8 was sin-binned for some foul play and
Grove took the opportunity to turn the screw, with some great handling through forwards and backs
resulting in centre Jamie Burns finding space wide on the right, wrong footing the full back and
outpacing the cover to score near the posts, Sevier missing the conversion for a 20-14 scoreline.
Things got a little out of hand shortly after, with prop Gary Eltham incorrectly sent off after a
scuffle which the referee did not see, but bizarrely asking the home touch judge his opinion and
predictably pinpointing a Grove player for some punishment. This should have handed the advantage to
Windsor but instead galvanised the aggrieved Grove team, who promptly recovered the ball from a mistake
at the scrum by the Windsor no 9. Outstanding no 8 Ben Nicholl picked up the loose ball and fed Roger
Sevier for his first try of the season, also converted by him for a 27-14 lead. With the game almost
up and Windsor playing for pride, another superb break through some tired tackling in midfield by
Jamie Burns gave Grove the chance to score, and with energetic flanker Guy Nicholl on hand for the pass
from the last move of the game, Sevier converted his try for the final score of 34-14 and a significant
away win for Grove.

Saturday 30th January Grove 13 Amersham & Chiltern 48 No report

***********************************************************************************************
Saturday 13th February Aylesbury 12 Grove 6
Grove lost any realistic chance of catching the two league leaders in Southern Counties
(North) when they narrowly lost at Aylesbury in a very closely contested match on Saturday.
This was not the greatest performance by Grove with some poor tactical decision making on
he field but credit has to be given to Aylesbury's dogged defence which could not be penetrated
through the whole game. The first half saw Aylesbury constantly attacking but Grove's
defence was resolute and the home side could not break the Grove line. Grove did manage
to get into the Aylesbury half of the field a couple of times during the half but two long
range penalty attempts by fly half Roger Sevier were both missed. Aylesbury definitely looked
the stronger of the two sides although both scrum half Dave Maryon and hooker Jon North stood
out for Grove. Aylesbury missed a kickable penalty and with half time looming the game was
deadlocked at 0 : 0 but after 4 minutes of injury time Grove took a 3 : 0 lead with a Roger
Sevier penalty which went over after hitting the crossbar. At half time Grove lost flanker
Guy Nicholl with a dead leg replaced by John Chapman and also lost Dave Maryon with a pulled
hamstring. Maryon's position was taken by Roger Sevier with centre Jamie Burns moving to fly
half and replacement Simon Cramp coming on to make up the full side. In this half it was Grove
who were the main attacking force for most of the time with particularly good aggressive tackling
from lock James Kerr being noted but it was Aylesbury who nudged 5 : 3 ahead when their outside
centre touched down in the corner after a blindside break. No. 8 Ben Nicholl and centres Nick
Sevier and Jamie Burns for Grove then all managed to separately drive over the Aylesbury line
but none could touch the ball down. Grove kept up the intense pressure but wrong options were
taken and overlaps ignored so no scoring resulted until Grove were awarded a penalty in front
of the posts which Roger Sevier cheerfully converted to put Grove 5 : 6 in front. Grove continued
to attack and Ben Nicholl in particular had a superb run up the middle of the park but then somewhat
against the run of play Aylesbury made a terrific break out and ran in a very good try to the
corner of the field. The difficult conversion was put over and Grove were in trouble at 12 : 6
behind. Aylesbury now resorted to a kicking game to give them territorial advantage and frankly should
have scored another try but for a clear overlap in their backs being ignored. With only minutes
left Grove threw everything at their hosts but again wrong options were taken and a very exciting
game ended with victory to the home side.

Sunday 14th February

Grove 17 : Oxford Harlequins 62

Not unexpectedly Grove, from Southern Counties (North) lost to Oxford Harlequins, from National Division 3 (South West) in the Oxfordshire Cup on Sunday but not before producing a performance which saw every Grove player leave the field with their head held high. This was a defeat with honour and the Grove forwards in particular can pride themselves that they achieved parity with their counterparts throughout the match. Not once did they give an inch in scrums, rucks or mauls and in fact actually drove their level five counterparts backwards on a number of occasions. The final score of 17 : 62 really served to show what a devastating set of backs Harlequins possess because once they had the ball in hand they were virtually unstoppable.

Although it was Grove who launched the initial attack it was nevertheless Quins who scored first. This unconverted try after 5 minutes was very debatable with the referee eventually being persuaded by the touch judge that the score had been made. Grove immediately tore back at Quins through a great attack from No. 8 Ben Nicholl but it was Martin Nutt for Quins who took them back into the Grove half only to be thwarted when veteran Grove prop Pete Mack kicked the spilled ball into touch from behind his own posts! Despite staunch defence from Grove, particularly from hooker Shaun Sherwood who put in a great tackle on Quins scrum half Kenny Sewell, it was Quins who went further ahead with a superbly run but unconverted try from full back Graham Crapper. Grove then got on the scoreboard following a penetrating run from centre Nick Sevier which resulted in a penalty to the home side, slotted by fly half Roger Sevier. Now at 3 : 10 down it was again Grove who hammered into Quins and unluckily for Grove a beautiful grubber kick by Roger Sevier to winger Tom Harrington, who was bearing down on the Quins try line, was intercepted by a Quins defender who kicked to relieve the pressure. Roger Sevier collected and superbly side stepped the oncoming Quins defender but his follow up high kick was taken by Martin Nutt who ran the full length of the field to score a great but again unconverted try to put Quins in front by 3 : 15. It was then Quins who came straight back at Grove and centre Anthony Cope got on the scoresheet with a great try between the posts, converted by fly half Andy Noyce to put Quins in front 3 : 22. The Quins backs then immediately cut loose again and scored between the posts for Andy Noyce, with his successful conversion, to put them out of sight at 3 : 29. Grove were then very unlucky when scrum half Nick Hayes took a quick tap penalty, broke the Quins defence completely and with the whole of the try line at his mercy was brought back by referee Terry Mullarky, for not taking the penalty through the mark! Grove continued to attack with great work from lock John Chapman, Shaun Sherwood, Nick Hayes and Tom Harrington coming off his wing into the centre of the line. This was followed by another good break by Nick Sevier with terrific support play by full back Paul Shepherd only for the ball to be spilled and collected by the ever alert Martin Nutt who again put in a devastating full length of the field run for Quins to go further ahead. Half time was called after the successful conversion by Noyce and Quins were in the lead 3 : 36.

At the break Grove brought on centre Ben Law with Ashley Lane moving to full back to replace Paul Shepherd. David Needham replaced Simon Chadbone for Quins. Quins then struck immediately with a virtually unopposed run by their backs with Crapper scoring a converted try to take the score to 3 : 43. From the following kick off flanker Guy Nicholl took a tremendous catch followed by Nick Sevier beating eight or nine defenders with a superb jinking run only to be finally stopped by giant Quins lock Adam Pearson. Ben Nicholl and Roger Sevier then quickly launched into the Quins defence winning an eminently kickable penalty. The easy points on offer were refused and a quick tap penalty was taken instead. The ball was followed up by the Grove pack who now drove Quins backwards and with Nick Sevier side stepping Martin Nutt another penalty right under the posts was awarded to Grove. Again the easy points were refused and the kick was put into the corner. From the resultant line out it was firstly flanker Jamie Fredericks then replacement hooker Steve Dixey and lock Lee Wright and then Ben Law who smashed into the Quins defence. With Grove only now inches from the Quins line Ben Nicholl went over only for the try to be disallowed. The pressure was kept on by Grove however and following a mistake by the Quins defence it was Nick Hayes who dived over for Grove's first try, Roger Sevier converting to take the score to 10 : 43. Quins immediately hit back and scored an unconverted try through ex-Grove prop James Eckhert to take the score to 10 : 48. The irrepressible Martin Nutt then went over again between the posts after a super run up the wing and Quins were 10 : 55 in front. Again it was Nutt who made the next try for Quins and now they were 10 : 62 in front but Grove were not finished. Ben Law was like a bull and smashed his way back into Quins finally passing the ball, via a long looping pass from Roger Sevier, out to winger Zach Grant who fed replacement hooker Jon North who was then unlucky not to score in the corner. Grove were awarded a five metre penalty however and replacement flanker Ed Church looked certain to score between the posts until being very heavily tackled by Martin Nutt right on the try line leaving both players lying prone for some time. Play recommenced with a penalty to Grove and replacement full back Chas Boshell was unlucky when he slipped over twice following great mazy running attacks. Prop Jimmy Wallbridge won the ball with some very aggressive rucking and following the ball passing through several pairs of hands Ben Nicholl dived over for Grove's second try which Roger Sevier converted to take the score to 17 : 62. Grove restarted with a quickly taken penalty from the kick off and following a superbly crafted Roger Sevier cross kick to brother Nick, lurking unmarked far out on the left wing, the Grove attacker was denied what looked like a perfect try when the referee adjudged him to be offside in front of the kicker! A tremendously exciting game thus ended with both sides clearly showing a good deal of respect to each other despite the somewhat overwhelming scoreline.

Saturday 20th February

Grove 19 : Beaconsfield 24 Grove effectively self-destructed on Saturday by giving away
19 points in the first half against lowly Beaconsfield with a mixture of poor play and far
too much indiscipline. Grove lost first choice scrum half Nick Hayes before the match due to
flu, John Neddlekoff making his first team debut this season as his replacement. Grove
started reasonably brightly with a couple of good runs from flanker Guy Nicholl but were badly
hampered within the first five minutes when flanker Lee Wright had to leave the field for
hospital with suspected concussion, after a particularly devastating tackle, James Kerr coming
on as replacement. After 20 minutes one of many penalties already awarded to the visitors was
hen turned into a 3 point lead by their full back. Within 5 minutes Grove transgressed again
in front of their own posts and Beaconsfield were 6 points in front, again through their full
back. A promising attack by Grove fell apart following a poor kick upfield which was returned
with interest by Beaconsfield but Grove came straight back and were awarded a penalty when the
referee should have played advantage, given Grove at the time had a four man overlap and possibly
could have scored the first try of the match. For the second time in the match Grove lost
their own line out following the penalty award. From the next Grove penalty awarded, fly half
Roger Sevier attempted a kick at the posts but this went just wide. Grove smashed back into
Beaconsfield through hooker Shaun Sherwood following the 22 metre drop out and set up a great
open side platform to run the ball but the ball was lost after the wrong option to go blind was
taken. Grove then gave away another penalty plus a further 10 metres in front of their own posts
for backchat after captain and No. 8 Ben Nicholl was harshly yellow carded for what the referee
adjudged to be a dangerous tackle on a Beaconsfield player, who had to leave the field permanently
as a result of damage to his arm or shoulder. The kick was put over and Grove were 9 points behind.
To make matters worse Grove gave away further penalties and taking full advantage the Beaconsfield
left wing neatly slipped the ball to their centre on the loop who scored the first try of the match
in the corner of the field. With the difficult conversion being missed Grove were now 0 : 14 behind.
As a result of a Grove player going down on the try scorer after he had touched down the referee
awarded Beaconsfield a penalty from the kick off. With 55 minutes having been played in the first
half Beaconsfield managed to score another unconverted try to leave Grove 0 : 19 down at the break
with a very large mountain to climb. Grove started the second half much better having made some
positional reshuffles and launched straight into Beaconsfield with a good long run from Guy Nicholl,
leading to Grove retaining possession through several phases of play, before winning a penalty. The
penalty was taken quickly and the ball spun wide to Nick Sevier on the left wing who barrelled his
way through three defenders, broke clear and ran in from the corner to score a good try between
the posts. Roger Sevier converted to take the score to 7 : 19. Grove immediately gave away another
penalty in front of their own posts but amazingly the kick for the points was missed and Grove were
let off. Nathan Brooks came on as a replacement after full back Ashley Lane had to leave the field
with a hamstring injury. Grove's attacks now became more intensive with good bludgeoning runs from
centre Ben Law in particular but passes kept going astray and the attacks broke down. Beaconsfield
counter attacked and following a scrummage scored on the wing while defending wing Sevier was down
receiving treatment for a bloodied nose. With the wing position undefended this was an easy try for
the visitors but it was debatable whether the referee should have allowed play to restart while the
Grove player was incapable of playing. The conversion was missed but Beaconsfield were now 7 : 24 in
front. Again Grove stormed back into Beaconsfield and again scoring opportunities were lost when final
passes went astray. More Grove indiscipline followed when prop Jimmy Wallbridge was yellow carded for
retaliation, following a bout of 'handbags'. Despite being a man short however great backs work,
including a break from Ben Nicholl, now playing in the centre, resulted in wing Simon Cramp going over
in the right corner. The difficult conversion was put over by Roger Sevier and Grove were now back in
it at 14 : 24. but with only 10 minutes remaining. Further rampaging attacks from Grove developed but
again almost certain scoring opportunities were lost with the ball being spilled at the last minute.
Beaconsfield, now visibly tiring, could only resort to kicks to get out of trouble. Another bout of
'handbags' occurred and one of the Beaconsfield locks, who should have received a yellow card for
persistently attacking a Grove player, staggeringly went completely unpunished! Grove were now completely
in the ascendancy and throwing everything at Beaconsfield and this paid off when, following a beautiful
pass from Nathan Brooks, replacement hooker Jon North raced over into the left corner to score from
what was to be the last move of the game. Roger Sevier's second difficult conversion attempt rebounded
off the upright and the game was over with Beaconsfield the unlikely victors at 19 : 24. This defeat
has caused Grove to slip from 3rd to 4th place in the league although they do have three games in hand
over Milton Keynes, who have replaced them.

Slough 29 Grove 30 Saturday 6th March 2010

Grove were almost robbed of a thoroughly deserved victory at Slough on Saturday when,
having dominated their opponents for most of the match and having delivered one of their
slickest performances this season, they fell foul of what they considered to be some odd refereeing
decisions.
Unlike in some of their recent performances Grove really hit the ground running despite the
referee missing a late tackle on full back Nick Sevier followed by clear offside play from Slough
which resulted in a penalty to the home side! The attempt at goal was missed but Slough were then
awarded three more penalties, the last of which was converted for them to take a 3 : 0 lead. Grove
struck back immediately when No. 8 Ben Nicholl burst clear and fed the ball to his brother and
fellow back row man Guy Nicholl who outpaced all of the opposition to score a great try, converted
by fly half Roger Sevier and Grove were in the lead by 3 : 7. Grove continued to attack strongly
and were very unlucky when hooker Jon North accidentally overran the bouncing ball, for which the
referee awarded a penalty to Slough! It was Grove however who went further ahead from a Roger Sevier
penalty, awarded against Slough's outside centre, who was also yellow carded. Grove now upped the
pace and very fast passing between flanker James Kerr and Jon North followed leading to a Slough
line out after Roger Sevier's huge clearance kick found touch.
Very strangely the referee then refused to allow Slough's quickly taken throw in even though no line
out had been formed! Great interplay between North, Ben Nicholl and centres Ben Law and Jamie Burns
and finally winger Gareth Hudson ended when the ball went into touch but again it was Grove who
continued to attack with Ben Law powering his way through the opposition backs. Hudson was unlucky
in the next attack but Grove were awarded a penalty in front of the posts, which Roger Sevier put over
for a 3 : 13 lead, when flanker Guy Nicholl was illegally felled by one of the Slough players.
Slough came back strongly though their big pack and came close to scoring but were held out by the
Grove defence. It was then Grove who immediately went on the offensive with further great running
and very fast handling from Law, scrum half Nick Hayes, Roger Sevier, Guy Nicholl, wing Simon Peel
and Jamie Burns only ending when a Slough defender was able to call a mark. Slough pushed back into
Grove's half and were awarded a kickable penalty after a minor bout of fisticuffs between Slough's
left wing and Nick Sevier. The kick went wide however and Grove retained their 3 : 13 lead and then
increased it after prop Jimmy Wallbridge broke clear with the ball, feeding Burns who passed on to
Kerr who fed Guy Nicholl for the flanker to again show a great turn of pace, racing in to score his
second try close to the posts. Roger Sevier's conversion took Grove to a 3 : 20 lead and it looked like
Slough were out of it. With half time looming Slough had another unsuccessful penalty kick attempt
followed by a very difficult one for Grove but amazingly Roger Sevier maintained his 100% kicking
performance by slotting it from distance to give Grove a 3 : 23 half time lead. During the break
Grove substitutes Ed Church and Terry Eltham replaced  hooker North and prop Wallbridge respectively.
It was Slough who attacked strongly at the start of the second half but great defensive work, particularly
from Church and lock Jon Chapman held them at bay until a penalty came Grove's way after Roger Sevier
was flattened by a completely illegal shoulder charge from the Slough No. 4. A period of aerial ping-pong
followed before Slough scored their first try of the match following a line out close to the Grove
try line from which they were able to power over and then convert to take the scoreline to 10 : 23.
Slough were then amazingly awarded a scrum following a scuffle in which Jamie Fredericks was punched
in the face by the Slough number 5 in full view of the referee. Undaunted it was Grove who came straight
back when Fredericks, who had just replaced Jon Chapman in the second row, smashed his way over in the
corner following terrific work by Guy Nicholl and Simon Peel. The difficult conversion was again
slotted by Roger Sevier and Grove were in front with a seemingly unassailable score line of 10 : 30
but then everything changed! Firstly Ben Law was yellow carded for not rolling away after a tackle
almost immediately followed by Slough amazingly being awarded a penalty try when Jamie Fredericks apparently
went offside following a scrum, stealing the ball from Slough, even though there was absolutely
no certainty that Slough would have scored had this not happened and it was also debatable whether the
ball had actually been released from the scrum and was therefore in open play. Fredericks also very harshly
received a yellow card for this alleged misdemeanour and Grove were suddenly down to 13 men with their
lead reduced to 17 : 30. Despite this it was Grove who went on the attack but Slough sensibly changed
tactics and kept the ball with their big forwards and moved back into Grove's half of the field.
Slough were then very lucky when a clear knock on by them went unpunished and a penalty was awarded to
Slough instead! This was followed by another penalty to Slough although no offence could be
detected and from the move that followed a try was then awarded to the home side seemingly on the insistence
of one of the Slough supporters, the referee appearing to be unsighted! The conversion was missed but
the scoreline was now 22 : 30 and Grove and their supporters were extremely disgruntled. With time
fast running out further penalties were awarded to Slough for offences that nobody could see leading
to the Grove captain seriously questioning the referee about what was happening.
Finally Grove's numbers were restored to their full complement but with the referee allowing feeding to
the scrum, crooked lines out, forward passes, obstruction and holding on to ball on the ground by Slough
to all go unpunished it was clear that there was going to be another score to the home side soon even
though Grove were still playing the better rugby. Things went from bad to worse for Grove when the referee
then decided to yellow card Jamie Burns for what only he deemed as a knee to the body of the man he
tackled when Burns was actually pushed from the Slough side and fell over. What then followed was a
clear red card offence by Slough when following a clearance kick by Roger Sevier the Grove fly half was
completely and very dangerously flattened by a flying feet first and very late illegal attack from one
of the Slough forwards who received no punishment whatsoever!  Despite all this Grove went back on the
attack through Fredericks and Roger Sevier who spun the ball to his winger but again the fly half was
taken down by a late tackle and again no punishment for Slough resulted! Then with all the Slough backs
clearly offside but not punished for it fighting broke out between the teams, the referee clearly having
lost control of the match.
Nevertheless once this subsided further penalties were awarded to Slough until they were on the Grove
try line from where they actually touched down for a try but this was missed by the referee and play
continued until a try was allowed following yet another penalty, which was quickly taken but illegally
not through the mark and while Steve Maryon, the Grove captain, was lying injured on the ground.
With the successful conversion Slough were now unbelievably within one point of Grove at 29:30.
The resultant drop out was declared by the referee to be the last action of the game but with the
ball being accidentally kicked directly into touch by Roger Sevier a penalty was then awarded to Slough
on the half way line which the Slough number 10 attempted to convert, thankfully without success.

Grove 24 Swindon 31 Saturday 13th March 2010
As is now becoming a home tradition Grove managed to go a long way behind in the first half only to claw most of the
points back in the second half but not enough to secure a victory. To be fair Swindon played the better rugby in the
first half and were deservedly in the lead at half time but it was largely Grove's indiscipline and errors that caused the half
time score to be as high as it was in Swindon's favour. Grove's lock James Kerr was yellow carded shortly after the
start of the game for apparently killing the ball in a scrum and the referee also awarded a penalty try to Swindon for the
transgression. With the successful conversion Grove were 0 : 7 down and reduced to 14 men. Shortly after Grove were
awarded a penalty but fly half Roger Sevier's attempt to kick the points went wide. Scrum half Nick Hayes, playing
advantage, attempted a drop goal but this was missed and Sevier was then unlucky when the resultant penalty kick from
the touchline hit the upright and rebounded into play. Swindon's full back was next on the scorecard when a lack of Grove
defence allowed him to run through and touch down for 0 : 12 but the conversion attempt was missed. Sevier's third attempt
at a penalty was successful and the score changed to 3 : 12. Flankers Jamie Fredericks and Guy Nicholl along with centres
Jamie Burns and Nick Sevier for Grove all had good runs at Swindon but no scoring resulted. Following a period of forwards
pressure from Swindon they once again scored when a missed tackle at the base of the scrum allowed the attacker through
for a relatively easy try. Swindon's fly half converted for 3 :19 and immediately Swindon struck again when a massive gap
between Grove's outside centre and wing was run through by one of the Swindon centre's for a really soft try and Grove
were virtually out of it at 3 : 24, the conversion attempt being missed. Swindon continued to throw the ball about well and
even though Grove won penalties the resultant lines-out were generally lost. The Swindon forwards were now definitely dominating
their counterparts but Grove were beginning to show signs of a fightback with strong attacks from Ben Nicholl and Nick
Sevier but the half time score remained at 3 : 24. At half time Grove's Jon North replaced veteran prop Peter Mack,
Paul Miles replaced Jon Chapman at lock and Nick Sevier swapped his inside centre position with full back Ashley Lane.
Grove immediately attacked and were rewarded when flanker Guy Nicholl went on a great solo run to score. The relatively
straightforward conversion attempt was unexpectedly missed by Roger Sevier and the score was now 8 : 24. It was then
Nick Sevier who went on a terrific solo mazy run from within his own half only for the ball to be knocked on following the
pass that should have lead to a Grove try. For Swindon their No. 8 was beginning to stand out as having a very good game.
Sadly Guy Nicholl had to leave the field permanently after a bad accidental clash of heads with the Swindon scrum half being
replaced by Jimmy Wallbridge. Grove were now pressing hard and were rewarded when Jamie Fredericks smashed his way
over and Roger Sevier converted to take the score to 15 : 24 and their was a glimmer of hope for the home side. Swindon
had a player yellow carded and Grove continued to improve with good attacks from Hayes and hooker Ed Church their
reward coming in the form of a penalty which Roger Sevier slotted to take the score to 18 : 24 and Grove were within a
single try of taking the lead. This all fizzled however when scrum half Nick Hayes tried to clear his lines when under pressure
at a scrum. His kick was charged down and pounced on by Swindon for another try to the opposition which was also converted
to take the score to 18 : 31. Swindon stormed back through their No. 8 but he was held up by Jon North and they were
unable to score. Jamie Fredericks was then yellow carded for not binding properly but after a long period of Swindon pressure
Roger Sevier relieved the pressure with a long touch kick and then Ben Nicholl launched a terrific solo attack from half way
and ran over for a try in the corner. The difficult conversion was missed and the final score of 24 : 31 had been reached.
Unfortunately for Grove they continued to attack but had run out of time and yet again the mountain Grove had given themselves
to climb proved just too high.

Grove 5 Chipping Norton 0 -- Saturday 20 March 2010

Grove ran out winners in a closely fought contest at Cane Lane on Saturday, with Grove captain Ben Nicholl’s try the difference between the two sides.

Grove started with lots of purpose, with lock James Kerr destroying his opposite number with a thundering tackle from the kick off. With Grove on the front foot for the first quarter of the match and creating chances, it looked like the match might be over by half time, but Chippy weathered the storm and came back into the game after Roger Sevier had missed a relatively simple penalty attempt for the lead. When the away side managed to win the ball they kept it for long periods, but with the Grove pack in a belligerent mood, could not muscle their way into scoring positions. Chippy had the upper hand at several scrums in the half, Ben Nicholl doing very well to extract the ball from a retreating scrum but unable to get past the tackles of Chippy openside Matt Dawson. With Adam Smith also missing a shot at goal, the scores remained level until a fantastic break from Guy Nicholl created an overlap and with brother Ben on hand to apply the finishing touch and Roger Sevier missing the conversion meant Grove went into the break with a 5-0 lead.

The second half started well for Chippy, with their pack forcing a number of turnovers early in the half, but as Grove settled back into their stride, they created a great chance form a scrum, with scrum half Nick Hayes running through a gaping hole in the Chippy defence. With only the full back to beat and support from Nick Sevier and Gareth Hudson either side, the referee inexplicably stopped play with the front rows squaring up to each other some 40 yards back. The resultant restart was given as a scrum to Grove, but they quite rightly felt aggrieved with the decision to stop play in the first place. Miles and North replaced the hard working pair of Chapman and Kerr, and, with Edd Church moving to the back row, Grove started to look more energetic than Chippy in open play, and only some indifferent decision making from the Grove players stopped them from scoring again. Peel replaced Lane to give the back line a different dimension, and with both sides attacking where they could to try and secure the result, the game was open to either side.

With the clock running down and Chippy chasing the game, they won a scrum on the Grove line, and with the ascendancy they had for most of the game in the set piece felt they could force a pushover try. The Grove front row chose this moment to make their presence felt, and with the Chippy front row buckling on impact, Grove won the ball back and cleared their lines. The referee signalled the end of the game, to the relief of the supporters and players, but Grove felt they should have won the game by more, and Chippy had a chance to win right at the end unjustly.

Bicester 5 Grove 43 -- Saturday 27 March 2010

Grove reclaimed third place in the Southern Counties (North) league with an emphatic win over bottom-placed Bicester. Although Bicester launched the first attack, it was Grove who were first on the scoresheet after five minutes, when, following a smart series of passes in the backs, the ball was moved to wing Tom Harrington who had a speedy run up the right and then cleverly broke inside and passed to supporting full back Nick Sevier, who evaded a despairing tackle from one of the Bicester centres to run in and touch down between the posts. With Roger Sevier converting, Grove were 0 : 7 up.

Then, in true Grove style, a whole series of penalties were given away until Bicester had a lineout five metres from the Grove line, from which they launched a mighty drive and scored a good pushover try. With the conversion missed, the score moved to 5 : 7 with less than 10 minutes played. Grove came back strongly and it was not long before centre Jamie Burns made a scything run, which almost took him to the try line, but he was grounded and the ball recycled for flanker Jamie Fredericks to collect and power over for Grove's second try. Roger Sevier's conversion made the score 5 : 14.

Again, Bicester hit back strongly, but Grove were in no mood to concede further points and some mighty tackling by lock James Kerr and number eight Ben Nicholl held them out until Nick Sevier broke from the back; and with a good pass to Guy Nicholl, the flanker took the ball upfield before passing to left wing Gareth Hudson, who was unlucky not to make the try line, just placing a foot in touch on the way. Grove continued their attacks with penetrating runs from Harrington, lock Paul Miles, Burns, centre Ashley Lane and Kerr, before Grove were rightly awarded a penalty, when a now desperate Bicester player failed to release the ball on the ground. The easy penalty kick at the posts was not attempted and, instead, the ball was moved to the forwards for Ben Nicholl to touch down over the line for Grove's third try, converted by Roger Sevier to put Grove up 5 : 21.

Grove went further ahead when a high Bicester kick to Nick Sevier saw the full back powerfully run the ball from inside his own half, to score a great solo try. The conversion was missed but Grove were now out of sight at 5 : 26. With half time looming, prop Steve Dixey went on a strong run supported by Roger Sevier, fellow prop Pete Mack and Paul Miles, but this came to nothing, ending when Guy Nicholl was yellow-carded for an alleged kick at an opposition player! Fredericks was again unlucky when he crossed the line but the ball was adjudged to be held up. Despite these setbacks, Grove did score again before half time when the ball was smartly moved from Kerr to Roger Sevier to Hudson, who went over in the corner. The touchline conversion was missed and half time was called with Grove leading 5 : 31.

At the start of the second half, Grove became adventurous, with players trying to run the ball from inside their own 22 metre area, but Bicester withstood the attacks for quite some time, despite some exciting handling moves and attacks from Grove. With the referee now seemingly turning against Grove, with repeated penalties for various transgressions, the visitors were not able to make further inroads, and with Bicester unable to penetrate either, the game moved into a kind of stalemate. The hard working Jamie Fredericks was replaced by John Chapman for Grove.

The Grove forwards were now performing magnificently, taking the ball against the head at Bicester scrums and also winning great line out ball, thanks in particular to good work from hooker Jon North, but, despite this, the penalty count against Grove was growing enormously and sometimes unaccountably, and, although dominating the game, the visitors were unable to move the scoreline ahead. Finally, Grove did break into the Bicester half, following a terrific solo run from Kerr who was superbly tackled by Bicester, but the move ended with another penalty to Bicester. Pete Mack was replaced by Steve Proctor at prop for Grove.

Further big attacks from Grove then saw Guy Nicholl cross the Bicester try line but no score resulted. Eventually, the deadlock was broken when Nick Sevier crossed for his 'hat-trick' try, following a set move that saw him enter the line on a crash run, but brother Roger missed the conversion and the score moved to 5 : 36. Steve Maryon came on for Ben Nicholl, who had to leave the field for stitches to a badly-gashed mouth injury. Roger Sevier and Tom Harrington then each made good breaks, but Grove were perhaps trying to be a bit too slick and, also, play was being continually stopped for penalties to Bicester.

With five minutes remaining, Nick Sevier went on a terrific run out of defence down the left wing, passing the ball in a timely fashion to Gareth Hudson, who sped over the line to score his second and Grove's final try. The conversion was put over by scrum half Dave Maryon and Grove had won the game by an overwhelming 5 : 43 scoreline.

Grove RFC (5) vs. Newbury Stags RFC (8) -- Saturday 3 April 2010

A depleted Grove side lost to lowly Newbury Stags at Grove in this much postponed match, eventually played on Easter Saturday.

Grove were without regulars Ben Nicholl, Jamie Fredericks, Nick Hayes and Jamie Burns and their presences were sorely missed. The match itself was fairly non-eventful with just a single try apiece and a penalty for Newbury. Newbury's extremely large and heavy pack dominated the game and ensured Newbury had about 80% of possession throughout the match, but Grove's backs, when they got the ball, looked the more dangerous, although their performance as a unit was riddled with handling errors, caused mainly by the very wet conditions.

The game started with persistent attacks from Newbury's forwards, but Grove's defence was solid despite Newbury players continually lingering offside at rucks and mauls, without punishment. After ten minutes, the Newbury scrum half made a dart for the line and looked to be going to score, but for a crunching tackle from full back Nick Sevier, which took the attacker through the corner flag and into touch. Finally, good work from Paul Miles in the line out was rewarded when the Grove forwards drove their counterparts over the half way line for the first time in the match, but, with the referee still completely and wrongly ignoring 'lazy runners', Newbury took full advantage and continued with blatant offsides at every opportunity. Using this tactic, they were able to move back into Grove's half and were then awarded a penalty in front of the posts, which was converted to give them a 3 point lead.

Grove were unfortunate when, in their first backs handling move, centre Tom Clipsham slipped over and the move broke down, but, shortly afterwards, Newbury's big No. 8 took the ball from the base of their scrum only to be completely and brilliantly upended by Grove scrum half Dave Maryon. The ball flew loose and the ever-alert flanker Guy Nicholl pounced, snatching the ball and running 30 metres up the touchline to score spectacularly in the corner. Unluckily, Roger Sevier's difficult conversion attempt hit the upright, so the score only moved to 5 : 3 in Grove's favour. Almost immediately, play moved back to the Grove try line and, after a number of drives, one of the Newbury forwards was able to touch down for an unconverted try, to put Newbury back into the lead, at 5 : 8. Grove could then have levelled the match but, surprisingly, Roger Sevier's relatively straightforward penalty kick was missed. Grove now attacked again, but a mixture of indecision, delayed passes and knock-ons meant no gains for the home side. Newbury continued to dominate possession, but, just before half time, Grove did have a promising attack, which fell apart after Nick Sevier broke the defensive line only to drop the ball with the try line beckoning.

The second half was marked by fairly indifferent play by both sides and some very peculiar refereeing decisions, mostly in Newbury's favour. Ben Law replaced Ashley Lane in the centre for Grove, followed by Ed Church replacing flanker Jon Chapman and Jimmy Wallbridge replacing injured prop Steve Dixey. Ben Law's impact was immediately felt when the big centre smashed his way through the Newbury defence, but Grove could not capitalise with any points even though they were now spending considerably more time in the Newbury half of the field. A huge cross-field kick from Roger Sevier for wing Tom Harrington was promising, but dissolved when the winger could not gather the ball. The penalty count against Grove now started to mount and was not helped by perhaps-understandable dissent by some of the players. The game ended with Grove swarming all over Newbury in their own 22 metre area, but, thanks to a final knock-on, were unable to score.

Witney RFC (17) vs. Grove RFC (11) -- Saturday 10 April 2010

Barring an absolute disaster, Witney have secured promotion from Southern Counties (North) after a very hard-fought win over Grove at Hailey Rd.. In truth, this game could have gone either way, and, with Chipping Norton beating Milton Keynes, a Grove win here would have secured third-place for them, but that now has to await the outcome of next week's final league encounter with Milton Keynes.

The game started with Witney launching into Grove at 100mph, but Grove reciprocated and it was not long before full-back Nick Sevier tore the home defenders apart with a superb run, side-stepping several Witney players before being stopped. Next, the Witney forwards drove Grove's pack backwards, but then their backs made a mistake, and Grove launched back into the attack, progressing into the Witney half and gaining a penalty close to the touchline. Roger Sevier's attempt at the posts from this difficult kick failed, but this was clearly going to be a close and exciting game. Witney struck back and were unlucky not to score when their full back exploited a gap in the Grove defence, only to knock-on with the try line at his mercy. A penalty to Witney followed, which the full-back converted to give Witney a 3 : 0 lead with 16 minutes gone. Almost immediately, Grove won a penalty for a high and dangerous tackle on centre Ashley Lane, and, this time, Sevier made no mistakes, equalling the score with his kick. Witney stormed back, but the Grove defence was strong, until the home side's right wing sent his opposite number the wrong way and sprinted for the line, only for Nick Sevier to smash him into touch with a try-saving tackle. Minutes later, another penalty was awarded to Witney, and the full back had no trouble giving his side a 6 : 3 lead. Again, Grove hit back following terrific pressure from Grove flanker James Kerr at the drop out, and, catching the defence offside, the referee awarded another penalty to Grove, which Roger Sevier cheerfully converted to once again level the scores at 6 : 6 after 25 minutes of play. Another penalty attempt was then missed by Sevier, before yet another was awarded to the visitors, only for the match's only sour note to ensue. Just as the Grove fly half was about to kick the ball, he was loudly heckled by a very unsportsmanlike Witney supporter and, clearly distracted, the kicker sent the ball wide of the posts. Witney then again pushed into the Grove half, only for the Grove full-back to once again turn the tables with a superb mazy run out of defence. Ben Nicholl for Grove, playing in the centre, tried to continue the attack, but the ball was lost and, taking advantage, Witney's centre collected and charged through for the first, unconverted try of the match to take the score to 11 : 6. With Paul Miles working well in the line-outs for Grove, half time was reached with no further scoring.

Witney started the second half with a superb and very fast run by their left-wing, but his counterpart for Grove, Tom Harrington, matched him for pace and took him out with a great tackle. Witney kept the pressure on, moving up to the Grove try line, but, despite forceful mauling, could not break through, although they were awarded a penalty that was put over to increase Witney's lead to 14 : 6. Grove now upped the pace and Ben Nicholl was particularly noticeable in his attacks. Grove substituted the injured Harrington and hooker Jon North with Ed Church and Steve Dixey, respectively. Again it was Kerr who stood out with very strong tackling, but Witney were awarded another penalty and increased their lead to 17 : 6. Undaunted, Grove hit back and again Nick Sevier made a very impressive run, driving his tacklers metres back before releasing the ball for Steve Dixey to smash into the opponents. The ball was passed through the backs' hands to left wing Gareth Hudson who could not break through, but then another superb attack saw Church on the other wing scythe through the opposition at great speed and, with ball being passed across the entire width of the field, Ben Nicholl neatly passed to Hudson who finally was able to pass his man and run into the corner for the game's best try. The difficult conversion was missed but, at 17 : 11, Grove now only needed another converted try to win. Witney drove Grove back to their own try line, but again Grove managed to escape. Another penalty attempt by Witney was missed and Ben Law for Grove substituted for Ashley Lane and immediately made his presence felt with his bulldozer-like attacks on the Witney defence. With Steve Dixey working like a Trojan, No. 8 Jamie Fredericks broke for the line, but did not have sufficient support, otherwise Grove could have had the final try they needed. With Grove throwing everything at Witney, a kickable penalty was ignored in order to get to the corner for a line out. From this, Grove moved right to the try line, but Witney escaped with a penalty, and, despite yet further tremendous attacking runs from Law and Church and complete pressure from Grove time, ran out and a very relieved Witney side had emerged the winners.

Milton Keynes (34) vs. Grove RFC (34) -- Saturday 17 April 2010

Grove secured thirrd place in the league by drawing with Milton Keynes (MK) in a most exciting match of changing fortunes on Saturday.

Had MK won, they would have claimed the third spot and Grove would have been fourth, so it was imperative to Grove not to lose this nail-biter. Things could not have started more bad badly for Grove, as MK hit the ground running and scored two converted tries within the first two minutes of play, from second row Webb and hooker Conway. Badly stung, Grove's outgoing captain and lock Steve Maryon then did a magnificent job of rallying his troops, bringing them back into the game and displaying some superb individual rugby skills of his own. Grove launched into MK and pushed them back into their own half with all of the Grove backs and forwards running hard at their opposite numbers. Finally, the pressure told and Grove were awarded a free kick which was turned into a penalty when an MK player deliberately threw the ball away. Fly half Roger Sevier kicked between the posts for the first success of what was to be a 100% kicking display by him and Grove were 14 : 3 down. It was the visitors who kept the pressure on, with great attacking and then, following a penalty on half way, centre Ben Nicholl had a superb run finally passing the ball to full back Nick Sevier who came into the line like a rocket and touched down without challenge. Brother Roger's conversion brought Grove right back into the game at 14 : 10 with 20 minutes gone. Again, Grove hit back through a superb 75 metre run by left wing Tom Harrington, only thwarted by MK scrum half Dan Pearson, who showed remarkable speed to catch the flying winger. But this resulted in another penalty quickly taken by Roger Sevier who passed to brother Nick for him to zoom over the line for his second try and, with the successful conversion, Grove were amazingly in the lead 14 : 17! It was now MK's turn to attack, and they won a penalty, but the attempt at the posts was missed. The immense pressure on Grove continued with very slick MK play, but great defensive work from lock Paul Miles and James Kerr, in particular, held them at bay. Lee Wright was blood bin replacement for the injured Guy Nicholl -- temporarily in the back row for Grove -- and then, in stoppage time, MK were awarded a penalty in front of the posts; successfully kicked to provide a 17 : 17 half time score.

The second half started with a long period of MK possession and, in particular, their outside centre Andy Williamson and scrum half Pearson shone with superb probing runs. Grove's defence again held, with Jon North and Guy Nicholl particularly standing out until MK won another penalty, but the attempt at the posts was missed. MK maintained the pressure, but number eight Jamie Fredericks and Roger Sevier put in great tackles. Eventually, a terrific run from Pearson led to a great but unconverted try by winger Manley, to once again put MK in the lead at 22 : 17. Grove eventually turned the tide and broke out of the long period of MK possession, winning a penalty just inside the MK half. Superbly, Roger Sevier slotted the difficult kick to reduce the arrears and the score was 22 : 20. Great attacking play from wing Gareth Hudson led to a big surge from Grove, but MK were able to touch down in goal from a kick ahead, for a 22 metre drop out, although their MK full back actually took the ball back into his own in-goal area and Grove should have had a five metre scrum. Grove replacements Lee Wright and Jon Chapman came on in the back row for Kerr and Fredericks, and both immediately made their presences felt with some great tackling. Grove's pack began to master their opponents with good driving mauls, but, following a good passage of play by MK, their captain Richard Hill took a great pass from their centre and sprinted over from ten metres for a converted try, leaving Grove needing two scores, at 29 : 20, to win, with time fast running out. Steve Dixey now replaced Gary Eltham in the Grove front row. Paul Miles superbly collected from Grove's kick off, and it was the visitors who were back in the ascendancy. Centre Ashley Lane made a very strong run for the MK line, but was stopped just short of the try line. A series of kickable penalties to Grove were tapped and the reward came when Chapman forced his way over the line for Grove's third try, converted by Roger Sevier, to take the score to 29 : 27. Again it was Grove who stormed back into MK through Miles and scrum half Dave Maryon, who got the ball to Roger Sevier, who scooped it to brother Nick for the full back to beat what was left of the defence and score an amazing try between the posts, completing his 'hat trick' for the afternoon. Roger Sevier's conversion provided what was felt to be the winning scoreline of 29 : 34, but, with virtually no time left on the clock, the referee allowed the MK restart and, despite a great run out of defence by prop Jimmy Wallbridge, the ball was lost and MK created an overlap in the backs and their left winger Boddy shot over in the corner to level the scores again at 34 : 34. Much to Grove's relief, the difficult conversion was missed and an absolutely fantastic match to end the season came to a close with Grove in third place and Milton Keynes in fourth. What a game!
