News of forthcoming 1st team fixtures, the Extravaganza, Club Lottery, Pre-Match lunches, 2016-17 membership etc.....

Dear Grove RFC Member,

Extravaganza Saturday 20th August 2016

I am sure you will all be aware of the Grove Wantage Extravaganza which the club is organising for Saturday 20th August 2016 and will hopefully attend this event with friends and neighbours.

The response to this event, from the community in our area, as well as from other parts of the country, has exceeded our expectations. We now have nearly 90 stalls booked in, along with a full programme of displays and attractions. In addition we have received very generous offers of help to run the event from Grove Parish Council, the Scouts, the 41 Club, the Co-op in Grove and the Grove Volunteer Litter Pickers to help organise the day. There are also a great many Grove RFC members who are also working, or will be working, very hard to make the event a huge success.

However, we could still do with help from our membership.

Firstly, one of the stalls we, Grove RFC, is organising for ourselves is a “Spin for a Bottle” competition where the winner receives a bottle as a prize. We would appreciate members of Grove RFC donating a bottle of wine or spirits to help swell the profit. Either you can deposit these with me at my home address (15 Barbury Drive, Grove OX12 0NA), or let me know by email what you will be donating and then bring it to the Extravaganza by 12.30 pm on Saturday 20th August 2016. The stall will be sited near the front of the rugby club and will be run by Barry Chapman and Mark Prestidge. As one of the main aims of the Extravaganza is to make money for the club, please be generous.

Secondly, please volunteer your help on the day. Due to the increasing number of stalls booking in, it is going to be a busy day and we need as much help as possible, so please email me to volunteer, even if it is for a few hours. We really do need your help for this event.

Pre Match Lunches 2016 – 2017

The following are the dates for the pre match lunches for the coming season. They are not ideally spaced out due to International Matches, the way the fixtures fall and the desire to invite different teams from previous years, but hope lots of you will be able to attend some, if not all, of them.
All arrangements are much the same as previous years. Book by email or telephone with me before each lunch, the cost per person will be £15.00 this season which is incredibly good value for the excellent quality of food on offer. Anyone connected with Grove RFC is welcome to attend, so please let me know of anyone who is not currently on the contact list.
If you haven’t attended before, it’s an enjoyable way to support the club, have a really good meal, as well as a drink and socialise with other club members, sponsors, invited guests and officials of the opposing club. The lunch normal starts at around 1.00 pm, depending on the kick off time and there is always a raffle in aid of a local charity.
I will be sending out a reminder about the first lunch, but you can book in with me for the 24th September 2016, now.

I also attach a Club Membership form and would urge all of you to join the club as soon as possible.

Mr Martin Stalder will be forwarding you a club handbook with fixtures, contacts and international ticket details in the near future.

Club Lottery

In order to try and raise finance for the club and enable it to operate as we would all like, we have organised a Club Lottery which is drawn on the last Sunday of each month, at 1,00 pm, in the clubhouse. I attach full details on how the lottery is organised, but briefly:

• There are twenty-five numbers in the lottery. 1 to 25.

• £1 buys four numbers.

• Players win the prize money if their four selected numbers match the four numbers drawn.

• In the event of more than one person having the same numbers, the prize money will be shared. A second prize of £25 will be awarded to any member who manages three numbers.

• Fifty percent of the total take will form the prize for the winning numbers drawn.

• If there is no winner(s) on any given lottery, the winning prize money will be added to the next month’s lottery.

We would like to greatly increase the numbers entering this lottery each month by involving the wider community and need you to help. Firstly we would like all club members to join which you can do in the following ways:

• By Direct Debit for a suggested amount of £5.00 each month which gives you five entries into each monthly lottery. I currently have 30 club members who have joined via this method, or by paying a cheque for £60 enabling them to take part in twelve lottery draws. An application form is attached which also gives full information on how the lottery is organised.

• If you don’t want to enter into a Direct Debit arrangement, then you can contribute a minimum of £1 per month – more if you want and this will be collected by a Grove RFC Lottery “Agent” on a month by month basis. The names of these Agents will be forwarded to you in the near future and hopefully if we are able, they will be someone associated with the area of the club you most frequent.

• Once we have a good base of club members participating, we will then organise taking it out to non-club members – family friends, neighbours, work colleagues etc. so that both the prizes and profit for the club increase in size and frequency.

Please give the Club Lottery some serious thought because it is a tried and tested method of accumulating cash for the club without any single person having to contribute a huge amount.

Kind regards

Roger Williams
President, Grove RFC
